all the search engines are shady in some way (DuckDuckGo is powered by Bing btw, and Google is prioritizing Ads), so the lesser evil is aggregating them all, hence why I'm using "own" Searxng instance(s), which also "resets" cookies randomizing every search for least "biased" results

PS: you can check some of the public instances (definitely don't trust them though) just to see how it works: https://searx.space/

    Firefox for Browsing

Thorium for Videos; it's highly CPU/AVX optimized,
and Chrome used to have better image quality (deep technical nitpick)

It's selling privacy as a commodity. I'm staying far, faaaaar away from it. I honestly have no idea why the mainstream media keeps recommending it as some sort of privacy temple, it's getting kinda wack at this point.

I already use it, thanks. DuckDuckGo was probably the worst search engine I've ever used lol.

    Yandex search is great.

Have a look at https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium-windows; with uBlock Origin, it's IMHO better than brave, but need some tweaking when launching for the first time, can be disqualifying for some (for Widevine or installing extensions from the chrome web store for example; by the way, the maintainers plan to keep the compatibility with Manifest v2 extensions for this fork as long as it won't be too much painful to do so)

There is a ton of useful flags also like to keep history like Firefox or enable tab muting from a click, ect.

Sure, you can uninstall it if you want to, lol. It's up to you. I'm just sharing the facts. Weigh the facts and make an informed decision. I personally just don't understand why anyone would praise or trust Brave in 2024.

I think it varies. I think the EU courts found a recent legal case against Microsoft meaning in the EU variants of Windows They now have to allow the option to uninstall some things, including Edge, but other global versions have the uninstall option removed. There is a way around it with certain tools to get rid of it, but it's not possible as standard outside the EU I don't think.

Not as standard, no, I'm afraid.

For those brave & foolhardy: you can replace msedge.exe and then deny all access via permissions, even to SYSTEM, this way any updates will not replace it back again.

As annoying this shit is, it's fairly bad idea to remove Edge from Windows (just like Explorer in earlier versions) because Windows does use it for some internal things.

Better to change all file associations away from Edge, like described here: https://thegeekpage.com/disable-microsoft-edge-in-windows-11/

Mullvad Browser (another Firefox fork, extra secure, some pages not working on it but it’s safe)

Firefox, but properly tuned and with proper plugins. Nothing beats it.

Brave runs on a crypto scam. Once the scam dries up - it dies.

surprising amount of brave hate lol. Ive had nothing but a positive experience. Its very fast, blocks every ad and pop up, and ive made 3-400 USD$ using it. I could care less if they are harvesting my data. who isnt. at least im getting paid for it.

I used to think Firefox was the best browser, but I found that it was very memory-hungry. In fact, I experienced memory leaks with Firefox, which is a major issue.

Chrome was also a great option for a while, but in the past year or two, I've noticed that it has become more resource-demanding and its performance has decreased significantly.

To my surprise, I tried Edge a couple of years ago and have been using it ever since. It's incredibly fast and uses very few resources. Microsoft really did something right with Edge.

This was pretty much my roadmap of recent years too, but feeling now like Edge is starting to stray into where Chrome got to with resource usage and invasion, especially constantly trying to push back to Bing whenever it gets a chance and how the updates sometimes restore some options that were disabled etc, so just wondering what the alternative are.

looked up sites for a few suggestion, and I quite like the look of Zen, particularly the split browser feature, which would work well on my 34” ultra wide monitor.
