I think it's a matter of how you use it and how you present it. If you program a VSTi bass line with enough variation, process and present it in the context of a well done full mix, I think very few people would question it. Now if you A/B solo tracks of real vs. VSTi bass lines, then it's a whole different thing. Having said that, some people can program SWAM solo strings with such precision I couldn' tell it apart from the real thing myself. Also, some bass and guitar pedals or amps change up the sound so much that you could never tell real from VSTi after that kind of processing, and that's even more true of electric pianos and analog synths.

Depends on the programming, but Trillian has been the premiere bass guitar/upright bass VI for many years for its realism. I would also highlight the Scarbee 88s.

I guess it's time to review security. See if it works now.

There are many that can sound completely realistic if you stay within the parameters of what that particular library is capable of. :dunno:

Playable virtual instruments trying to simulate the real thing (A piano, drums, xylophone, whatever you want). For instance, the swam instruments mentioned before, or Trillian...

    Yeah?

Not so convinced by the the SWAM strings, but I am smitten with the SWAM reeds. Oh man, I wish I had an EWI controller to use with them.

The Ample Sound Guitar Vsti when used properly sounds amazingly realistic imo. I wish I could use it as it was intended(been trying for months lol). The pre-loaded songs/midi are crazy!!!

It's common that people who have played whatever instrument has been sampled, can tell whether it is real or not. Not so much in Orchestral scores which sound increasingly realistic, but certainly can tell on individual instruments. The most regular thing heard is "A (instrument type here)" would not play it/phrase it like that.

ToonTrack EZ Drummer 3 and Suprerior Drummer. They sound exactly like real drums and not only that. This interface is a real drum set and you can get many different kits

Exactly! It's so versatile and complete that if you're not careful, you might end up overkilling it

By the way, I haven't tested the Archtop Guitar by Straight Ahead Samples, but it looks even better than AGSH.

Oh, wow, that one looks so interesting!!

It's definitely a matter of knowing the instrument and how to program it, as many have mentioned before

As a rule of thumb, the shorter the notes of the instrument in question are and the less the notes overlap into each other, the easier it is to simulate them with a VSTInstrument. Those VST libraries that did more complex instruments very convingly were often sample-based (as in playing more than one note) to a degree, yet even legato libraries etc. got better over the years.

I have heard so many "real" classical music that I often have thought that any sample library would sound better. So you should specify what you mean with "the real thing" and of what quality of the real thing you are talking. Because ... there is a broad spectrum of that.

So, that goes for orchestra libraries ...

Totally true! I remember hearing a comparison between a real brand new Rhodes and a library and liking the library more (very different, probably sampled from an older instrument). But speaking of samples... Take a look at this, OP! I don't mean no hot take, but in all honesty, I think it's mate in 5 for sample libraries.
