The substance, this has a very high 7.8 rating on the IMDB.
Its supposed to be a horror scifi movie about vanity (I guess). its trite, MTV video all gloss and gore in equal measure. I'd give it a solid 4 or maybe 3.5.

its a sort of a mix of Cinderella, Carrie, and a Jane Fonda workout tape, without any of the good bits. A tale of the vanity of women and the greed and lust of Hollywood for yet another pretty face. The cinematography is the story, its an endless stream of extreme closeups, glossy fashion style photography and "meaningful" long shots like the one above.

The story is thin and the loopholes are endless, to me another example of modern film telling a poorly thought out story, badly and using cinematography to try to make it look interesting and meaningful.

on the upside, though lots of nudity and gore, though at the end you'll probably wished you spent your time watching something else.

 

A recommendation, not a warning....

the Thirteenth Floor. Released in 1999. Just rewatched this since I got a Bluray copy and remembered this as a good film. So many movies have come out since this film that are derivative or used elements of this film, so that was interesting to see in rewaching this. The film holds up well and doesn't really seem to have aged at all.

A murder mystery of sorts, but much more and told well. A video game designer is killed and the police are trying to solve this crime.

Worth a watch, or a rewatch. A little bit of Blade Runner, a little bit of Inception, a touch of Tron, and even a touch of Metropolis(2001)
but original in its creation and execution.

I'm not sure what to think of this movie. The first half was solid in my opinion. The last 20 minutes very nearly completely ruined the movie for me. Like Yoko Ono ruining a perfectly good song because "fuck you, I can do whatever I want and you can't touch me, so I'll just yell for 20 minutes straight."

(Also, don't watch if your partner is the jealous-of-women type.)

Interestingly we just watched 13th Floor again recently and it is entertaining... not an all-time classic but good...
I'm a fan of Metropolis too, my daughter is a hardcore anime fan and has never seen it so we're going to have to drag that one out.

 

i watched a copy when it came out, and wasn't terribely impressed. years later I got a bluray copy and rewatched it and man the detail in those drawings is incredible, and probably understanding the story line a bit better, made it a much better film for me. I quite like it now. There are a couple "interesting" videos on youtube where someone makes a music video using ELO music. unfortunately the resolution isn't that good, but its still fun to watch.

This reminded me of a movie I watched in the last month. Its a documentary about Satoshi Kon, the Animator/director etc. He only did a handful of films, but they are all remarkable. I have been watching Tokyo Godfathers every Christmas Eve for about a decade now, its just so much fun.

Satoshi Kon:The Illusionist is the name of the documentary, and you can see some of his influences mentioned as well as some mangas he did.

it might be on streaming services, its mostly english with the japanese dubbed or subtitled. There is a copy or two on Youtube as well.
Worth a watch, and If you've never seen his films, this will give you a taste. It made me get into the midcentury Japanese films that were influential on him. Like "Late Spring" it has a certain quality that captures a time.

the plot had sooooo many holes in it, when the demi moore character got t-boned for being a moron and didn't get a scratch, not even a bruise, it began its slide downhill. The Substance arrives with no instructions other than some bold print, yet everybody knows how to work the mechanism, etc, no money changes hand, the products are placed in a locker in a bad neighborhood - why? etc,etc,etc, - nothing makes sense or even creates interest. if you want to see a good horror scifi, I recommend "Upgrade" or "it Follows"..
