yeah yo i read about this the other day; as an artist ive had nothing but good experiences with Sony Music personally; i cant speak for their divisions in other countries and all of their labels, but here in the U.S. theyre solid - Pink Floyd also kept all of their songwriting rights which is the shit

theyre getting up there in age, i think this was a good move to look out for their loved ones - theres a lot in the music industry to learn on the business side, not everyone wants to deal with all of that; and making sure family does it for generations is a lot to ask. especially when it starts getting to grandkids that have never met you and dont care that much about your music. Sony has the resources and expertise to handle that catalog and the family will still get paid from the songs with those rights. overall that money can really make a difference in the lives of their loved ones after theyre gone and protect their music for generations - good move imo

The way I heard it Gilmour was tired of having to make decisions regarding releases, anniversary recordings etc, and after 60 odd years (and some were really very odd) who can blame him. Floyd was a corporation (in legal structure or a limited partnership) and had many voices wanting to be heard, some fights were hard to get things done properly. what 80 something wants to spend his limited time left wrangling over details of things they've done a half a century ago?

It was likely the proper decision for David Gilmour, he probably didn't need the money, he's got a great tax write off in his charity which he raised a fortune for by selling his musical instrument collection (except for the bits he kept for himself as is his right)

Still it is proof that times moves on and art and commerce continue their strange dance even in the digital age..

@Garamondo Furbish : yeah i did read that. also i read that part in closing it was because of political statements that Roger was making, which was making buyers weary about buying it and the value of the deal kept going down. apparently in 2022 they were about to close one for $500 mil, then Roger started saying all this political stuff which scared the buyers

Highly unlikely, Floyd have an immense library of live concerts made by an army of fans with all manner of bootleg recording devices, not to mention all the mixing board recordings in the wild.

Sony has only the legal rights to the music, billion of souls have the actual recordings or access to them..

Sony may fuck up the catalog, like they fucked up Acid and all the Sonic Foundry sofware they bought and then ran into the ground, but the recordings live in a million places, on hundreds of millions of computers all over the world. It is more resilient than the internet itself.

if you know business men, they probably gave Roger some money to say stupid things to drive the price down, so they could get a better deal..

you know sony (sony records) gave/made huge loans to Michael Jackson against his catalog (he owned the beatles catalog amongst others, including his own recordings) in the hopes he would continue to squander his money and they could foreclose on his catalog. They are nothing if not devious...

I'd like to think Sony had Welcome to the Machine playing in the background as the contract was signed.

@Garamondo Furbish : idk, that starts getting into conspiracy territory. i do know fellow artists though on many levels throughout my life, most (including myself) arent afraid to voice their opinions publicly, our whole shit is expression lol. especially with stuff we're passionate about and feel in the right of

also like i said, i speak from my personal experiences and my friends experiences, also people i actually know who work for sony music and theyre labels, theyre good people; stepping into business and knowing it is important though, i wouldnt tell anyone to just blindly trust any business or financial institution they decide to work with to be clear. always use your judgement and seek outside counsel of things you arent aware of

but almost any company thats been around as long as they have (since the 30s) has had bad business and shady employees. i cant hold that against them, ive made mistakes in my short life, i wouldnt want anyone to hold that against me forever. i also dont know the actual facts around that. i just speak on what i know to be true

If I just spoke on what I knew to be true, I'd spend most of my life in silence, the truth is an elusive thing that slips between your neurons iike grains of sands through clutching hands.
Speculation can be merely extending what we know is true by applying our knowledge gained through learning and life itself, speculation without knowledge is imagination which is the basis of creation of new things as well as variation on past things.

the truth is good, but it is not the only needed component of understanding or learning of life and this journey we have been given.

they are on in years, how much longer will they be alive, good move to see that their families will be well taken care of, but the taxes in UK will take more than half, unless using Isle of Man or Bermuda tax sheltered accounts. But I am sure their lawyers will tell them how to hide from the taxman.

Haha, I've witnessed serious, heated discussions by artists and bands about how much it'd take for them to sell their catalogues, catalogues usually consisting of one to three poorly recorded albums and a few singles, all albums that have only ever been purchased in very small numbers from Bandcamp, and from merch tables at shows within a 100m radius. I know some of these people, and they're solid musicians and they know the game... but get some booze in them and watch how quickly they consider their music invaluable to the world.
