For me, these exercises we've been working here have really helped me out both as a songwriter and electronic musician in giving me a new way to direct my focus, what I borrow from to create my own versions of reality. I'm fairly certain that 100% of the songs that I write and sing with draw directly from lived experience...the welling of emotionality transcribed by my lens in trying to make sense of the world as it is and to embellish, filli in the gaps as well as to fortify the storyline I am advocating. Though to my thinking, with finding meaning in another's work there are unique choices and roads to follow. Because in a way the visual art provided for each exercise is in a sense literal, a moment frozen in time and not prone to any change whatsoever because of it's own singular-ness...it's objective impression. Where the cogs begin rolling is in my mind is when the literal becomes the figurative and my imagination can expand boundlessly. It's a novel approach for me and feels like experiencing a rare beauty in the natural world, like swimming with dolphines...awe inspiring and at once takes me breath away. The sense of childhood play I'm getting out of it too is dearly welcome.

@Lois Lane : ayy thats dope, im glad youre able to get that much enjoyment from it. i feel like it definitely comes through in your music and the descriptions of it. its also cool to see someone still so excited to create and perform, so many artists get jaded or bitter over the years, while youre still having fun with it; thats super important to see and read imo, so thanks for sharing that with me. im also glad you took the initiative to get the ball rolling on this. like ive said in the past, it was really beneficial for me on tour the last few months to have this to focus on out on the road. i feel like its given my life more balance as an artist, to just create without so much perfectionism and expectations around my songwriting. so thanks for starting this bitch up, its definitely one of those things i didnt know i needed till i found it; im glad to see im not the only one

 

@Grape Ape.. The exercise on these pages is actually the brainchild of Amore_de_la_Vida who originally participated in a similar group on a French language forum. I only submitted the first artwork, the last painting of mine that I did about 20 years ago.

 

lovely painting this one (i actually wanted to join the last one and i even had an idea in mind, but i didn't have enough time; still got the project in my folder though!). i might do something today/tomorrow, and after that i'll listen to the entries.
the image reminds me of those infinite zoom animations, or maybe, as the title says, microcosm/macrocosm: patterns and things that repeat at every level, from the lower ones to the higher ones. as above, so below. how to put all these thoughts into a track? well that's the hard part, let's see what comes out.
nice to see this is still going, it's a good practise for people who have a hard time finishing their tracks. it's just a nice push. cheers

roughly four hours of work.
inspiration/ideas: so, after posting, i went on the balcony to smoke a cigarette while looking outside and checking the picture. i soon remembered the thing about the neurons and the universe (they look similar; not even sure if it's true, but it doesn't really matter, the patterns are everywhere), so i already had an idea for the name: neural something. travel was the first logical choice. so what comes next, i thought; neural, something electrical, squelchy?, maybe a bit raw/strong, but i don't want to make some nasty gnarly sounds, so i started with the most simple bass ever and a smashed up kick (which later i changed only to some parts of the track); the synth is a simple channel that takes audio from the main synth and goes through supermodal, i just turned the gain knob around. i then found some kind of pad sounds that i liked and i decided that this should have a little bit of ambiance, again looking at the background of the artwork. then the more i looked at it, the more i realised: wait im missing an acid line. luckily most pieces worked together (for me!) so i had to delete very little/never started over, it was pretty clean. the guitar sample has nothing to do with the track but i quite liked it and it was one of the first pieces i laid down.
of course the track is 150bpm. kick is quite soft/short i wanted to have a bigger bass later (around 2:07 mins).

@Backtired : yo groovy shit, i dig it; has that deep dark club techno vibe. i really like the second half more when that like hardstyle type kick comes in and it gets more acid - ive always felt like techno as a whole is inherently futuristic and outer space sounding, so its a easy fit with this and you did a great job, i can really tell youre in your natural habitat with this - i especially like those descending tom fills in like the middle, that shit sounds sick

@Backtired we're definitely moving with this one. At first in expension in the void, then stars start passing by at incredible speed. And all of a sudden these stars get larger and larger and become intense fleeting light flashes. You realize you're finding yourself in a basement, in rythmic communion with our generous lover Goddess Music, sweating bullets (thankfully i always bring my towel). Spacing out underground.
Amazing 90s acid trance feelings, with more low end. Continuing pushing the bar high !

here is a beat i made for this, i had an fx pack of tiger sounds already downloaded sitting around wanting to be used in something so i tried to make something sorta trippy with them. some spring reverbs and delays all nebula stuff.
