You should buy the stuff that you use to earn money because is the right and ethical thing to do, not because of a rule. Supporting the dev you like is the way they have to make new stuff appear if the dev is doing a good job and making your job better per consequence. And the only way to discover if a tool worths the money is... working with it, not with 14 day demo trial and beep noise on rendering. Plugin marketing is dirt. Long live the teams that can give us poor mortals the chance of testing stuff on our job and supporting the good dev and exposing scam ones. I got several bought plugins which i use R2R version due simpler install and better performance, for example.
