Thanks everyone who chimed in, and thank you, Sinus Well, for your suggestion of using MK Slicer. I suppose I was expecting Ableton sorcery from it, but it's a way better method than the one I was trying before. However, I used trigger mode (rather than pitch detect), as advised by Alejandro Hernandez, who posted a video about MK Slicer some months ago:

 

Man, Reaper never ceases to impress me... when I think that Sequoia 17 added features that were already available in Reaper a long time ago, it only reinforces my perception that this DAW is a real treasure. I hope they don't sell or modify its core, because it is simply unbeatable! My only complaint is limited to its notation editor. I dream of the day when we'll have a better combination between musical notation and DAW, because then, for basic notation purposes, Reaper would simply send Cubase and even Dorico/Sibelius to hell (OBS: I'm not talking about proselytizing contemporary postmodern music notation, which is the field where these two lats notation editors really excel).

I have to say, Reaper is a bottomless pit. I wasn't aware of this workflow myself! So kudos to Reapertips and the Reaper community for creating so much helpful content!
