When you record a phrase like strings and record it with CC1 & 11 - Can you overwrite just the Midi CC. I know you can edit it later but like using the faders. Anyone know how to do this? Ableton or Cubase.

I want to play a phrase and then add the Midi CCs to that phrase using the controller. If there's any preexisting CCs, it just doesn't do it.

 

I use the automation Read & Write buttons on the VSTi, not the piano roll. For example, I record an organ part and then add the Leslie in a second run. Does that help? Cubase 12, by the way.

 

Gonna try that, I just got Cubase 13 day before yesterday. I'm used to Ableton, learning Cubase atm.

 

if your app does not allow to record it independently from thej notes, make a copy of the track i.e. split notes and controllers onto two tracks.

or, of course, use 2 tracks from the beginning on.

 

Can you be a little bit more detailed, I played the thing than "Extract Midi Automation" - Got them into Automation Lanes, still can't rewrite using Faders. What do you mean Read and Write on VST.

 

1. You open your VSTi intferface/GUI
2. In the upper right corner you click both the R(ead) and W(rite) buttons
3. You put the cursor where you want to start editing and press play
4. Move your controller as desired
5. Don't forget to put the VSTi out of W(rite) when you're happy with the results, or it will overwrite the work you just did when you press play again.

 

I tried that, it just conflicts and then sounds start glitching. Doesn't Overwrite. Is it something with my midi controller or what?

 

go in the "midi recording modes" menu,
in the default view it's located left-down the project window (unless you changed preferences)






here you can choose many different/complex recording modes, refer to the manual for insight, anyhow I assume you need the "replace" option to be activated





but before everything you have to CHECK in the preferences what you have activated
(if I am not wrong it isnt by default on "controller")

Got it working, I was retarded! Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate the quick responses.

 

First of all check if your MIDI controller works when you're just playing without recording. If it does, as a second step delete the information on all controller lanes from the piano roll you can start with a blank canvas. The notes can stay, just delete all controller input. If it still gives you trouble I'm afraid there's not much more I can do from here.

in certain complex MIDI CCs projects it can be convenient to have different tracks, it was a common trick on Cubase ages ago

nowadays you can have multiple lanes in the project windows for piano roll and/or audio-automations or staying in the piano roll with multiple lanes for MIDI CCs

 

Figured it out in Ableton too. Gotta turn on the Overdub button to perform such in Ableton.

pretty common in cubase, he appears to be using audio-automations in the project windows and expressions maps in the midi editor, as stated there are different workflows available in cubase. It depends on the VSTi architecture. For a Kontakt library this example would be the quickest, otherwise for instruments like SWAM it would be better to use MIDI CCs.

my choice is: MIDI CCs while programming and audio-automations while mixing. I tend to divide the workflow this way, it helps "the concept" of separation beetween "instrumental performance" and "mixing sessions" which is always good. Someone likes to program and mix at the same time, guess it works as well

just cant figure out how to do that in ableton lol guess it could be a nightmare

 

I guess, that's why I'm picking up Cubase. Handling tons of Orchestral tracks with multiple articulations is much more stable in Cubase.

Audio Automations? Isn't he Automating Midi CC 1, 3 & 11 [Mod, Vib, Exp]. I know he's using Expression Maps but "Audio Automation". What's that?

Read and Write are not the only Automation modes you can put a track into. You should have Touch and Auto-Latch, or something similar to those names now. You put the track you want into one of those automation modes, record arm it and hit play (or record), typically. When you use Touch, anything you do on that track is recorded as automation data. Latch is essentially the same thing. The difference is wether they only write automation until you stop moving or release the control. The other will be drawing automation but then will overwrite that very last parameter value to the rest of that CC on the channel until the end of the track. If you want to use a controller to create the automation parameter values, you have to Midi Learn them first.

 

oh correct, I didnt open the video full screen so I didnt see what he was doing in the project window. My bad sorry. Also, I usually edit MIDI CCs from the midi editor, so when I see the project window I always think at "audio-automations" lol thats my workflow as stated

'audio-automation" I used this strange word to distinguish from MIDI CCs automation. In certain VSTi you can do the same things both ways.

audio-automations is what you use when activating the READ-WRITE buttons on the VSTi, as you know it's different than MIDI CCs

 

I'm getting used to Cubase slowly. It's really different from Ableton. I can do most stuff in ableton in a breath and now it's a puzzle just to figure out how to send the follower to start, lol!

I just customized the theme, though it's not as neat as my Ableton. But, having those Modulations below the Pitch in Midi Editor is just great for orchestral stuff. I can't believe how shitty Ableton's Envelopes are in comparision.

This is related to "audio-automations" that has the same recording modes like midi, or wave-audio-track recordings. You can overdub then merge or replace. Just the windows or the terms are different to not mix midi and audio-automations
