Comparing what a manufacturing company like Roland or Yamaha do, with an example company like Waldorf, or Clavia even; can have a lot to do with their corporate mindsets about production. The production numbers involved are so different. If you look at Roland with their "Botique" units, they were starting to get in a more market niche-demand focused direction. If a company is willing to make 1/10 the number of units, then you see them producing gear with all the unique and interesting features, and the higher price tags to go with them.
