    hey guys

Anyone know which instrument and preset was used for the main lead, starting at 3:38, video below:

I got OsTIrus, Nordlead vst (Nodal), Spire, Diva, Hive 2, Zebra2, Dune 3 and plenty more, struggling to get that sound.
If you have a preset for it for one the VSTs, please share it with me. Many thanks

My guess was going to be JP8000. This track is from 97.

Some of those sounds are too complex to be simple synthesis, so I'd be looking at the Waldorfs. The filters on the lead sound a bit like Novation but 1997 is too early for those, unless they had pre-sale units. UK Company so possibly.

It sounds a lot like the virtual digital DSP series to me.

Have you tried an unison sinewave, slightly shaped torwards square/saw, just for some overtones?

thanks, yep, tried it, just can't get it right! I am not a sound designer so for me, it's a case of messing about. Thought I'd ask if anyone knew.

Do you mean you can't get the tone/color right, or the soundstage, too?

could be some like PWM? - NL2x - Nordal could get something like this.

those early tracks simply had super thin sounds, but just FXed very good. And on top very good mixing.

This still sounds crazy to me after all that time.

the cheeky plk of the for an angel came from a juno - i couldnt really believe it, its so sharp.

so could be he just rebuild the sound from the original and used it for his remix?

Exactly that, the tone is very different (then again I am no preset/sound designer), seeing the video posted by Hellfire, it seems that particular patch came from the JD-990 (9:35), a custom patch. I am sure it can be re-created by some talented sound designer. Awaiting impatiently :)

Do you have Leads > Amazing Trance Pluck in your Dune 3... Sounds similarish maybe can alter EQ, Reverb, Cutoff to taste and layer with another sound

90s dance sound design was never really exclusive, but the arangement and the mixing due to hardware limitations, was just on an insane level.

If you still have Hypersonic 2, try the 'Heart Solo' Preset. it's almost perfect without any processing. I'll upload it in it's pure form and see what you think.

I've just compared the two side by side for the first time. This preset is harsher and will need some chorus and smoothing but it is fairly close (just not as close as I first thought) anyway it's the closest I can get without some form of manipulation.

the arangement was only visible as midi clips compared to today, you had to have everything in your mind.

I remember Paul Van Dyk saying about For an angel that i had remember the whole melody line and played other elements to it all in his mind.
At that time they really had to, bcs gear was expensive and DAWs were very basic in terms of features.
This changed how you arranged and guided to a different way of thinking as compared today.

In a way its the limitations, which dictated the workflow, which lead to a better a understand what the main melody needed.
I find hearing about those limitations very interesting, its part of why something is what it was back in the days.

today we strip that away, because we can simply replay it, store it or play as many variations of it.
