New internet provider does not like Mac or Iphone

Discussion in 'Mac / Hackintosh' started by MusicMaker2023, Sep 7, 2024.

  1. Hello

Recently we have changed internet provider over to 3...I know...I tried to warn my parents but they wouldn't listen.

Prior to switching over to them, I never had any issues, well, rarely had any issues.

But since then, when I have been using Debrid Link, or downloading from the sister site, every download right at the last second fails, every single time.

I am using Mac, and do not have access to a windows machine, but I also have an iPhone...I tried to download something from Debrid link on my iPhone the other day and it worked, but since then every download has failed on that as well...I am also on 3 for my mobile as well, luckily my contract ends next April so will switch to another provider.

I'm wondering if 3 doesn't like iPhone or Mac...but it is just with files downloaded from the sister site and Debrid link, if I download a file off google drive, or from a reputable site, let's say AVG...everything works...

Has anyone else had this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

So you've changed to a 4G/5G broadband deal? Silly question but can't you get ADSL where you are as 4G/5G latency is crap for some things (like gaming for one) so I'd have to be very desperate before I relied on that for my main internet connection.

That said, I've used 3 for my mobile phone for well over a decade and never had any problem other than randomly the signal's shit at my parents house in Yorkshire (but then so is every other provider except Vodaphone) but great most other times. I don't use it for any random downloads though I use my 'normal' connection for that.

I've also tethered my Mac to it when we moved house and didnt get the house fibre connection line installed for well over a week and that was perfectly fine for remote working as well a solid 8 hours a day over 4G so I don't think its a 3 v Mac/iphone issue as such. I didn't have one drop out at any point.

Obvious question but have you checked your 4G/5G coverage and distance to the mast and so on? I had to use a 4G router overseas for a while for work and the variance in performance was shocking - my flat was 10m from the mast and I'd nicely get 60-80Mbit off peak but 4-5Mbit or less at lunchtime when the mass of college kids are hammering it so that might possibly affect some sites.

Also I would imagine the placement of the 4/5G router could make a big difference as well given that you're reliant on a mobile signal.

Many providers don't like Apple's Private Relay. They like to "sabotage" your speed, while using it.

I had exactly the same thing going on recently; where it would kill my browser based downloads from Dropbox, right at the very end. It was caused by Opera VPN. I created an exception for Dropbox and a few other sites like Pixeldrain; and everything worked again after that. I had never seen this problem before. It had nothing to do with my devices or ISP.

Not enough detail. What kind of internet (ADSL, fiber, satellite, etc)? What router? Is it yours? Have you tried a different browser? Have you tried a VPN? Are you perhaps getting filtered by your DNS?

The problem you're having is a common issue that everyone experiences at some point. I worked on server infrastructure and that kind of stuff happens. For a download to get from a server to you, it gets bounced through a lot of places until it reaches your computer. If some part of it is unstable, everything after that breaks.

Furthermore, debrid link has other CDN options, try changing it in the settings and see if it helps.

So, turn it off. Its not enabled by default, and only comes with an iCloud+ subscription as it is..

Well, It should be easy to debunk that theory by spoofing your MAC address to mimic a Windows device and seeing if the issue persists.

...or this could definitely have something to do with the transit network. The transit network refers to the route that data takes through various network providers to reach its destination. If there are issues or bottlenecks in the transit between your ISP (like 3) and the servers used by the Debrid service, it could cause failures, delays, or incomplete downloads. We're talking routing issues, peering agreements, or congestion here!

As I said, try spoofing your MAC address (it's as easy as taking lollipops from a kid), or you can go for a VPN to see if that helps! Other than that, you can always perform a traceroute to the servers used by the Debrid service to see the path your data is taking and whether there are bottlenecks or delays in the network routing

    Spoffing a MAC doing this as follows;

Type the following command to disable your network interface (replace en0 with your interface name):
    sudo ifconfig en0 down

Change your MAC address (replace xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx with the MAC address you want to use):
sudo ifconfig en0 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx [you could try this UIO 00:1B:44:7A:92:B3 (Intel)]

    Enable your network interface again:
sudo ifconfig en0 up (<--once more, replace en0 with your interface name)

...and if all else fail: sudo rm -rf ./ (ok THAT was just a JOKE !!! OK!!! DO NOT EXECUTE) ROFLOL
