They are authentic representations of what the real instrument does but they're only starting points. You can process it and take it to many different places.

I really like Softube's Moog and Prophet. However, I don't really get all the hype the Yamaha CS-80 gets. Every single demo is the Blade Runner patch, like it's some kind of one-trick pony. I wasn't born back when it was released and wonder if it's something more historical than substantial... I mean, maybe back then this synth could do things that were not possible for jupiters, for instance? Some advanced kinds of LFO modulation or whatever. It certainly has more knobs! But from a sonic perspective from nowadays, I find Roland Cloud's Jupiter 8 way more interesting than Arturia's CS-80 or these Softube demos. I wish I could find good modeled synths of the RMI electronic piano, the Synton Syrinx or Electroharmonix pedals instead of these same synths that everyone does over and over. In this respect, Fullbucket and Cherry Audio are more interesting companies. Anyway, I posted a request on SS!

 

Hardware was good because of the performance aspect of it, even today poly-aftertouch is rare. I think that's why it was to revered, it did give it its own sound. But i never really got into any software version of it & the layout is kinda awkward. I'm still looking forward to try this though all of these synth are just tools i'm way past the this synth is better than that one. If i like it i like it.

 

im not interested. i use plugin and synths that i was using 15 years ago!

I found Starsky Carr's demo a pretty good demo of what you can do with this, what it sounds like, and such:

This obviously isn't for everyone. It's definitely a very nostalgic synth, the CS-80.. so if you're all about modern music, chances are you will have no interest in this. It does do brass stuff particularly well (thus the love in the Blade Runner soundtrack), but that's not all it's good for.

 

Eddie Jobson took the CS to its limits. Check out the first UK album, or even better, his solo album Green (if you can tolerate his singing; I love that album but ymmv).
