Yeah, gaming (Proton, SteamOS) has probably done more for Linux in the consumer space than a decade of tinkering on Wayland.

Imagine the market share numbers if the Linux Foundation started promoting Linux as the best OS for porn.

For those who are interested in open source (not only linux) audio/video softwares, check out the HyMPS project: a very large collection of resources !

Microsoft broke that in Windows 10, then fixed it when AMD users complained. They since broke it again in Windows 11.

Fortunately a patch is coming: AMD promises Windows 11 patch boosting Zen5, Zen 4, and Zen 3 gaming performance - VideoCardz.com

On the topic of this. I use Logic Pro as my main DAW. Why do we have projects like Wine which emulate Windows on different platforms (like Linux & MacOS), but somehow there is no macOS emulation? Is it because there is not enough interest (because most apps are cross-platform) or is it because people are afraid Apple will find a way to shut it down?

I would switch to Linux or Windows if I could use Logic or Final Cut there.

Also, why isn't there a truly good-looking Linux desktop environment? KDE Plasma is configurable, but no matter what I see it's not perfect and Gnome - I like it, but I want it to be more customizable. Maybe I haven't explored it that much.

every time i check linux distros on youtube, they show nothing but the file explorer, firefox, gimp/office, wallpapers and some odd terminal command.
when they show reaper running kontakt libs, vst's and vsti's, i might switch.

Hey was'up :) While i agree, i do believe the 4.5% is because of just what you described. Linux lately is accessible to gamers and while not every game is playable, at least on Steam which i 've tried, the majority is. And we all should realize this is largely because of India (almost 1.5 bil people) where Linux has a market share of about 14.5%. Another peculiar difference is China where Linux is below 1%. Dunno what to make of this really hahaha. If i was China i 'd be Linux 75%. Whatever...
I don't see Logic Windows happening. It 's a thing from another era. I do have a Logic 5.0 Windows license & 5.5 upgrade, somewhere lol. That is 21-22 years ago. Must have been 2003 or 2004 when Jobs told 70000 registered pc users to literally go buy a Mac and disontinued the pc version. For me it was only 4-5 years that i had switch from Mac to PC and i thought fuck you Steve, like hell i 'll switch back.
The only hope is if Windows on ARM code evolves to working natively then we can expect to see some new Hackintosh efforts. Till then though, i 'd stick with what works for me. And why not try some Linux Reaper, see what that gives.
    Cheers

The more the Linux preachers try to convince me that I should get into Linux, the less I feel like it.

LOL. You found a new toy. Having used Linux since the 1990s, I can tell you that your new toy isn't great for a lot of things, and is for a lot of other things. Wanna run a data center? Great. Wanna run a home server cluster? Great. Wanna run a database server? Great. Wanna run a website? Great. Wanna run the latest games and get hardware support for video cards? Sucks. Wanna run a desktop computer that doesn't do much other than browse the web and check your emails? Great. Wanna run a computer that can use the latest software out there? Sucks. Wanna run an audio rig that has to work with the rest of the music industry and professionals? REALLY BADLY SUCKS!!!

Linux doesn't have the hardware driver support that is needed for pro-audio, nor does it have the software that pro-audio guys expect. Pro Tools? Nope. Kontakt? Maybe you can rig it up, but you will be in a world of hurt. And if you are running a studio that has clients that expect everything to "just work", good luck. This is not a production ready platform for this.

So yes, I love open source software. I desire FREEDOM like everyone else. But you pick the right tool for the job, and if you want to be handcuffed around a very small selection of tools and the reliance that the next release of XXXX distro that you use won't break all the drivers, then have fun with Linux.

Linux is the desktop OS of tomorrow.
And has been for several decades now. :)

"You really should get into LINUX ! ! !"

It's not like I haven't tried quite a few times. It simply does not, (yet), have and do what I need.
Maybe when more devs follow the trend away from Mac towards Linux....perhaps. I'll keep checking
in but for now it just doesn't do it for me. And I have plenty of expertise at shoving square pegs in
round holes and my patience is nearly infinite. But no amount of patience can change a thing into
    a thing it is not.

BTW.....this thread reminds me a WHOLE lot of threads like THIS: "You really should get into REAPER ! ! !"
I feel the same way about it. I've tried and tried to like it but it's just not for me.

I love the idea of LINUX. But I'm not in the business (or hobby) of writing my own software, I do music and I want my tools, all of them. When LINUX gets there, I'm all over it.

If Ableton Live worked without any problems I would switch immediately but with this Wine it's a huge hiccup

Linux, the Libertarian party of software. Many people love it in principle and few support it in reality because the two major parties crush it in real- world power.

I have tried to switch from Windows to Linux several times. A lot of Linux users are downright missionary. I don't hold that against them, after all I use REAPER. :drummer:

But I'm mostly done with Linux. Too many distributions that are too different from each other. There's hardly a distro that doesn't quickly reach its limits. Poor driver support and poor software maintenance. Poor documentation and if you have questions about certain technical issues, for which you could not find any useful information despite extensive research, and ask them on Linux forums you get called stupid, accused of being racist, of being a trump supporter even though your question contained nothing of the sort and was purely technical. You're wished death and banned if you try to explain that you only came here because of a technical issue and don't want to engage in such conversations in any way. Yes, I know there are a lot of capable, very helpful and nice people out there who use Linux, but man, no... that definitely doesn't apply to the (hard)core community, it's weird and toxic as fuck (including a lot of the distro-developers). At least that's my experience over the last few years and I've had alot of many bad experiences with the Linux community. I use ubuntu in docker here and there for some programming applications, but other than that, I stay as far away from Linux as possible. I'm downright put off. It's a shame really... :/

Anyway, if you're a Linux user, I hope you have fun with the Linux distro you use and never come into contact with these weird people so you don't have to go through my experience.
