What's more CPU intensive AS Viper or OsTIrus ?

But is OsTIrus lighter than the Virus C emulator Osiris for you? I do not have an easy way to check, but it certainly seems like it.

I made a brief test opening a new set in Ableton and then loading 8 Osirus with init patch playing 16th notes.

I deleted those channels and I loaded 8 OsTIrus in TI2 mode with init patch playing 16th notes.

I deleted those channels and I loaded 8 OsTIrus in Snow mode with init patch playing 16th notes.

Intel 9600k CPU, RME FF800 at 256 samples buffer, smooth DPC latency and this is my CPU consumption from task manager:

    8 Osirus 59%
    8 OsTIrus TI2 mode 89%
    8 OsTIrus Snow mode 44%

The conclusion is that OsTIrus in Snow mode is more efficient than Osirus which is more efficient than OsTIrus in TI2 mode.

Snow mode use 1 virtual DSP instead of the 2 in TI2 mode. This means half of the max dynamic allocation voice count that TI2 mode has.

And how the sound of Snow differs from other modes subjectively? Is there a big difference in dynamic range, may be you catch sensitive degradation?

Good!, These results are ok as expected, since the Snow was built with half dsp (1) compared to two dsp of the big brother ti2 and ti, and dont forget in the ti2 the dsp where overclocked..
The max polyphony of the snow was 50 voices vs 100 from Ti an 120 from Ti2.
I still do use the hardware TI here since my pref emu is the Virus B, with a pre emulation uad (neve 1073 pre and eq) the best for warm and sat a bit these pure digital masterpieces.

The sound is exactly the same.

Snow and TI2 mode differences are just that Snow has roughly half the max voice count than TI2 mode.
These are the only 2 modes in OsTIrus.

Osirus is another synth and is emulating Virus a/b/c/.
    OsTIrus emulates Virus TI/TI2/Snow.

Virus Snow was a Virus TI with less knobs and less voices but the sound engine was exactly the same, so 0% degradation possible.
Virus TI2 is the same as Virus TI but with 25% more processing power.

Approximately (because Virus has dynamic voice allocation so it's not a fixed value):

Virus Snow 10 to 50 voices
Virus TI 20 to 90 voices
    Virus TI2 25 to 110(ish) voices

I don't want to be pedantic but it's just to be clear for other people: max polyphony on Virus Snow/TI/TI2 depended on patch complexity and it's not a fixed value. It was called dynamic voice allocation and Access site states "Depending on the complexity of a patch everything in between 20 and 90 voices can be achieved (10-50 voices with Virus TI Snow)".

Is the only difference in engine terms between the TI and Snow the available DSP (and thus, less available voices on the Snow)..?

That's what Blu's post above seems to be saying, just making sure I understand it correctly...

    Interesting fact:

I am an emulation buff of sorts. Been fascinated with old computer emulations like Spectrum 48, Commodore 64, Atari ST, Amiga... and that made me realise how much of this old gear could be emulated with our modern CPUs which are thousands of times more powerful. Anything that mainly used a CPU or DSP of some kind can be emulated with 100% accuracy. Heaven for nostalgic senile old gits like me. :)

Couple of years ago I started playing games occasionally. On PS2. More precisely PCSX emulator. Fascinating how that works. They had to emulate all the various chips that PS2 uses in software, then put them together and make them work just like hardware. Fascinating indeed.

Who wouldn't want to see as many of the good old DSP synths emulated as possible? :) The Suspects are doing incredibly good, useful work. I'm pretty much in heaven before actually dying, so to speak. And plugin developers could learn a thing or two hundred from these synths.

I suppose they could be emulated, but you might as well get the official version straight from Korg. Proteus libraries (in many variants) exist in original E-mu formats, and also have conversions to Kontakt (maybe other samplers as well).

Fantom no idea, but considering they've done their romplers in the cloud offering you might want to check there what patches might be shared between the Fantom and JVs/XVs.

I mean I'd love it if someone were to emulate the custom E-mu chips and bring out the Z-plane filters (outside EmuX3), but I think that's not going to happen.
