Hardcore listening!

I use the ATH-M50. They had them at my school and i liked the fit + sound.

I been wanting to upgrade or get a second pair. I read great revies on nad visio hp50. I been wanting to try it out. I haven't been able to buy them yet. ):

Haha, i switched from NS 10 mixing to headphone mixing since my cat sharpened her claws on the yamaha "woofers" (not really woofer)

i have to mix down on headphones alot and i find that if you A/B alot with a well mixed track in a similar style to the one you are mixing down you wont go to far wrong.

 

You cannot mix on only Cans, no matter what you do, no matter how good the cans are, the mix just will not translate the same way on speakers, no matter what people tell you.

You can "train your ears" to only a certain extent, but if you do this by referncing other already Mastered tracks in your cans, then the headphones will still be skewing your reference, becuase those are professionally mastered, and the problem Mud-bass frequencies were already fixed in those.

It is not as simple as simply "removing the mud" by using an EQ. There are all kinds of phase issues (and alot more issues), especially in the stereo feild that will never reveal themselves on headphones. The bass will sounds great in the cans, but as SOON as you render off that wav file of your new tune, and stick it in your car, the bass will be too round, to hollow, too loud and terrible sounding.

There is no way aroud it. Get yourself a decent pair of speakers. Mix in headphones if you have to, but then fix the mix on speakers. Then.. Here is the secret:

Use a laptop, and plug that laptop into the AUX jack in your car. Fix the mix in your car! If it sounds good in the car, its gonna sound good almost anywhere. (If you dont have a car with an AUX 8th inch input, then Buy a car that has one. I would suggest a BMW. Also - If you do not have a LAPTOP, you will need to buy one of those to mix on in your new BMW. Having a BMW Will consequently result in getting better quality, hotter, and sluttier chicks.)

Also, check your mixes in Mono ALOT. Not becuase the "Big Sound systems use Mono" But becuase if your mix sounds TOO different in mono (ie, some of the bass dissapears, reverb stands out,etc) it means there is a problem, and those problems are going to translate to speakers, and as well, should be fixed inside your new BMW.

 

my mixes improved big time since i figured a trick out. i mix on headphone only, know how it translates music pretty well i guess.

so when i'm at the mixing stage, i put toneboosters isone on the master fader, and choose nearfield setup, flat out that eq. my whole mix usually sounds terrible now. why? cause using headphones probably i did wrong volume and panning decisions. so now with the plugin on (sounding terrible) i start to mix again, set volumes, and panners, change some compression settings, in 5 minutes i have the mix done. now i remove the plugin. and guess what : the mix just rips your head off. it's wide, punchy, sounds good on laptop/ipod/cd player. greeeat plugin if you mix on headphones i use it before every mixdown

Sennheiser all the way. But to be honest i never tried another brand. Cuz it's German.
Made some of my best mixes using only headphones, but it's not something i do regularly.
Having great, and wack Speakers is a must.

 

I work with Pioneer HDJ-1500...they have lot of power but they are DJ headphones so the sound on them is not so precise, maybe you should check Beyerdynamic or AKG. You should anyway check your tracks on different types of speakers and headphones when you finish your track.

 

Never mix with headphones. It gives you a wrong image of your sounds. Good monitors in a good acoustic place is veeeerrry important

 

I have been relying on the Beyerdynamics DT-990 for my mixing/tracking sessions for a very long time. They are a little bass heavy but sit very comfortably and sound great at low volumes. Either way I mostly use them for tracking. Nothing beats a good monitor in the final mixing stages.
