    Sun Microsystems gone
BlackBerry mostly dust blowing around the Canadian Praries

yeah Intel could go bankrupt or be bought out by microsoft or elon musk or even Amazon.

Intel lost its way around the Pentium 4, everthing is a reiteation of the pentium 4 on a smaller die size with a gpu and cache.
they lost their SSD business which was a great product because of bad management.

Apple's Steve Jobs giving the middle finger to an IBM sign (1983). Today, Apple could buy itself 19 IBMs.

IBM went from infallibly dominant technology leader to dust bin of tech-history in little more than 10 years. Maybe Intel's destiny is to become the next IBM - who knows. Intel's survival (as a tech leader) is not guaranteed at all.

I'm pretty sure no one on this forum is using a PowerPC running OS/2 while looking at an IBM monitor powered by an IBM Ultra-VGA chip. IBM used to be Intel, Microsoft and Nvidia combined - until they had to eat a bit of humble pie.

Lenovo is a Chinese company that bought IBM's computer business 20 years ago. The money from the sale ($2 billion) was used towards IBM's $35 billion in debt at the time.

if you wanna (kinda) avoid this, i guess, buy on aliexpress the latest laptop chips that were adapted to desktop.... from what i have seen, they do not require modified bios anymore... this is a reference and this is a video of it (which although is in spanish, it is pretty self explanatory)

It's a good practice to undervolt CPUs in your computers for longevity anyway. I always do it, Intel or AMD. And test the CPU performance to see how stable it is at different frequencies. Same with memory. Not many people have patience for doing this these days.

So the microcode bios update is out, at least for some boards. Performance drop is very small for games from what I'm hearing. Don't know how that translates to DAW work.

Why would you upgrade to 12th gen at this point??? Gen 15th is expected later this year or beginning of next at the latest.

IBM share value on July 10, 1987:
    USD 39,88

Impressioned by Apple's succes, IBM decided to follow the same route by closing down the PC standard with the 1987 launch of the PS/2: new and incompatible BIOS, bus subject to rights of use, trademarked appearance, OS/2 not yet finalized: this proved to be the most catastrophic decision ever taken by IBM, which - without immediately realizing it - de facto abandoned the continuity of the standard to Compaq and its clones. The time when IBM led the way with 21% of the personal computer market was definitely over.

IBM share value on August 13, 1993:
    USD 09,94 (- 75%)

This castrophic fall was not the consequence of any technical failure of a product (which can always be resolved in one way or another by a return under warranty, a firmware update, a corrected revision, etc.), but was the long-term result of a poor strategic decision impossible to reverse due to the invisible nature of its effect in the weeks, months and even years following the decision being taken.

    Anyway...

IBM share value on August 12, 2024:
    USD 189,48 (+ 1806% from 1993)

Since USD 100 on August 13, 1993 are equivalent to USD 217.7 on August 12, 2024 (x 2.177), the adjusted ROI (Return On Investment) of IBM shares between these two dates is therefore:

    Adjusted cost per share:
    9,94 USD x 2.177 = 21.64 USD
    Adjusted ROI:
    (189.48 - 21.64) ÷ 21.64 = 7.756 × 100 = 775.6%

So it wasn't too risky to catch that kind of falling knife, huh!...

I'm probably safe from 13th and 14th gen progressive irreversible CPU rusting, as I'm truckin' away on my trusty Intel 3rd gen. :D
Eyeing the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and wondering if there will be any noticeable difference in productivity / heavy workloads.

yes hindsight is 20/20. I could have bought apple at 2.25$ a share or bitcoin for less than a dollar.
while IBM recovered it would take a good while for your money to be made as you are talking a 31 year date range..

Stonks always go up until they don't......

My aim was to demonstrate that a crisis caused by a momentary technical problem will never precipitate a behemoth like Intel into bankruptcy, since even in the case of a catastrophic strategic error that cannot be corrected in the short term, "dropping knives" - as IBM was - may represent a great opportunity for those who have studied the company enough to be aware of its potential.

    Oh, and BTW...

    USD 09,94 on August 13, 1993.
    USD 26.60 on August 18, 1995 (around x3 in 2 years).
    USD 131,22 on July 9, 1999 (around x13 in 6 years).

Would you have stood the wait? :winker:

and my aim was to state that no one knows the future, and those that think they do,especially those who think do so well that they are willing to bet their own money on it, often find their visions to be flawed.

Yes a large company has more assets and network to help it survive a business crisis, but without other favorable factors, business size alone cannot save a company from bad management. History is littered with companies who no longer exist.

Since the stonk market is at record highs, regardless of economic realities, like demographic trends indicating declines in first world populations which have the resources and needs to purchase most of the products of corporations large and small, now may not be the most favorable time to take a little gamble in the stonks market.

If one is chomping at the bit to get some of that easy cash, there are probably more favorable and less risky stocks out there.
With an aging population, healthcare stocks and certain pharma companies "might" have a better return ratio, as might Cannabis companies as legalization widens across the United States (a large market).

Neither you nor I are privy to the workings of the Intel engineering teams, and so have no idea just how kludgy the current designs are. For such a wide scale failure to have occured in a high end product, there must have been deliberate neglect across manufacturing and quality control loops. This is reminiscent of the Boeing Aircraft failures, failures of engineering, of software and manufacturing, along with management teamed up to cause at least 2 airplanes to fall out the sky and the door to blow off another mid-air, these were all "new" aircraft with less than a year of flight time.

Im not buying Boeing stock and Im not buying Intel....

    A very valid argument

The same goes for gals : better choose the one with the fullest flight logbook...:winker:

Excellent point. And this procedure has become so much simpler with tools like Intel XTU that allow you to test different levels of undervolt without even having to mess with the BIOS.

my CPU, 14700k was hit. like the other guy in the thread, seemed to start all of a sudden after I read the news online.

Not a big deal though, as everyone else is saying thank god they skipped it, etc. etc.

I disabled e-cores and no more crashing for me.

if anything, I'll do the bios update, replace the chip through Intel, and move on with life. not a big deal at all.

Still overall quite happy with the Intel purchase. it's a very speedy chip, Ryzen has nothing on these according to benchmarks, but most of all, it can actually be quiet and low temp too.

    Cheers
