people are still finding hardware units which have not been sampled and archived at best quality. Recording tech is constantly getting better, and so does the audio quality of "high fidelity samples". New samples may reflect what is being used in whatever contemporary music better than old ones. Checking them out can give you insight to what other people are doing. And of course, they are high bandwidth using if shared.

I don't want more samples, I just want the samples no one else wants.

To paraphrase a discussion I had with a friend recently about "secret weapon" tracks to play in a DJ set: "The secret weapons are not the tunes nobody else knows, but the ones no one else dares to play."

So yeah, virtual crate digging for oddities is still fun after years.

It's hard to differentiate what we "need" from what we "want" when it comes to making art, because - as much as some people refuse to admit it - we aren't machines, and we are moved by inspiration. I'd bet that a good portion of artists collect samples, hardware, vinyl, etc not because they need it but because they want it, but they want it in order to find motivation and inspiration to make art so in a way... they actually need it! Then yeah, if collecting samples is something that motivates you to actually make music, there's no problem, go on and collect coins, soda cans or whatever if that helps, no one is the same, art works in mysterious ways.

    What are samples to you?

    A. If you simply consider them tools get to your objective, then you don't always want more.
    B. On the other hand if you consider those a collection, is only natural that you gonna want to complete it.
    C. Both. In this case you also gonna want to complete your collection.

Now, let's imagine how those "field recording, found sounds" poor souls struggle with the (from novice to expert gear, and) storage space needed for their collection of (samples) sounds...

Better to have, and not need, than to need, and not have.

recently i downloaded all vengeance sample packs and im in the process of sorting them.
side by side with my Sample Library, which i mentioned a few times before and then there is also the KB6 sample collection for drum one shots, which has everything covered.

And if i need something crazy i go on freesounds dot org, there are so many random recordings tagged proper its a like golden nuggests.

i stopped seriously to download any other sample packs

Maybe, or you could just get then on demand, which is not that hard either.
I guess they're both working methods.

I once considered downloading a sample pack. but to me is just not worth it, neither financially, neither in terms of space.
i do like you and download samples as i need it. But usually i'm trying to record/create my own samples, which has been working best for me. Unfortunately i've lost all my 20 unique samples library along with my SSD last week.
Yes, my samples are all one-shot drum hits or foley/fx.

In my case i love using percussion loops and drum breaks. It's harder to build a convincing percussion tone with MIDI, way harder than drumkits, for example. I just let pros be the pros, and i want the maximum of pro percussionists on my table when i'm creating.

A good idea imo is to audition all you already have before getting new :)
