But what does that really mean for the everyday loyal end user?
What do you do think about this move and how will it affect your use of NI tools?

If they keep the perpetual licenses, then I'll purchase the Komplete upgrade every 3 versions or so, like in the past. If not, I'll keep using what I have already. It's not like the industry is moving to a new standard just yet.

So I'm good, no change here.

I think it's too pricey. No rent-to-own, no discounts for loyal customers.. Pfff. I rather have both Melda (rent to own) and UVI sucsription at the same price :D

    That pretty much nails it.

You will own nothing and be happy, someone said, I think.

    As if ...

i dont know if this will work for the regularly hardcore user of audio software?

it might work for those who want to use it casually.

And let me guess it will be a nightmare to use it offline! :deep_facepalm:

    This is the official word:

So 30 days of offline usage... as I don't use rented software (well I do, but that's on internet connected non-audio computers) I can't tell if this is workable for most or not. Maybe check the activation status just prior to a session coming up, or mark it to a calendar.

What I do know is that nothing kills creativity and productivity faster than having to fuck about with the computer.

30 days is fair, but it still absolute shit, if your DAW computer is permanent offline, so i guess there is no easy way to renew the license then?

and i guess "i dont do subs" is another valid argument.
What i always noticed, is if you have to much, then you are less likely to learn or be creative with the tools, at least that is me.

If you are a NI kontakt library fan (I confess) and want their full Komplete ultimate CE edition (I would if I could afford it) it is not to bad for 500 a year (or 50 a month). Full price is 1799 with yearly updates of 499. And with the subscription you get new libraries straight away.

    More subscriptions???

It isn't like people do not understand the price mechanism, but it's obvious the vendors do not understand the people mechanism.

I'm no subscription fan either. But to say they do not know what they are doing is a guess on your part. They are the ones with access to their own sales figures, market research, etc. They are not all doing this because their subscription models are losing them money. They may lose long-time dedicated customers, but they clearly do not care.

Don't care really. Hopefully it wont impede the groups cracking efforts in the slightest...

I can't imagine many scenarios where this would be a good deal.

The Starter tier is only interesting for people who want to dip their toe in music and don't want to invest the time. So really: a bit of a time waster for retirees (fair enough). It has terrible value for young, aspiring, poor artists.

You're not getting the really good stuff on the Plus tier either - it exists mainly to make the Pro tier look less bad.

And to get value out of the Pro tier, you already have to be a very busy and successful scoring artist working in multiple genres and platforms (TV, movies, music, etc). In other words, you were already decked out with pay-to-own effects and instruments well before before the Pro tier even started looking like a reasonable deal.

If you were to sub for 1.5 years, you'd be down $270, $450, and $900 respectively.

Right now, you can get T-RackS 6 Max, Black Rooster's entire catalog, or a very substantial chunk of UAD's/SSL's catalog for $80 - $140. That's all the effects plugins you'll need for the next 7+ years.. and compared to the sub, you'd still be up at least $130/$310/$760, which you can spend on instruments of your own choosing.

I think almost everyone can do better with pay-to-own or rent-to-own - if they keep an eye out for deals.

there's no reason to have your studio offline ...its not like people go out of their way to breach security to steal anything like masters , leak things , or sensitive studio materials .
