different chipset: TC170C140 "ESP2" made by Toshiba. The JP-8000 uses 4 and the JP-8080 uses 5. It seems to be a general purpose DSP custom made for Roland.

It would be no better than a Virus TI emulating a JP.

JP8k emu is almost impossible, the dsp is undocumented and Roland build their own design to drive the JP.

So you can either buy one and figure the DSP chip out and then maybe try to code an emulator, wich could run the ROM, which you had to dump.
but this is very work intensive. So its very unlikely a true emulation will ever happen.

And we cant be sure that Roland will release one for their Cloud subscription, since it is not known if the actual code for the JP chip might be still archive for them ... It would be huge if Roland could give us an actual plugin, since im quite happy with their Plugins.

So what we maybe are getting are some close as possible design replicants, but not the 100% deal like we have for the DSP56300 family synths.

there are fairly close synths out:
    - DIVA with its digital OSC
    - Spire has the JP Chorus

i think most of the Synth we have can be brought into the ballpark of the JP with a bit of post effects. You know the normal condidates.

You cant compare a Virus with JP, they are simply different synths. I wouldnt say one of the two is better.

    Listening with mobile phone:

    - JP8k is waaaaay wider, open, fatter, smoother resonance and cutoff, more analog-like resonance and overall filtering, I like FX and chorus sound more here
    - Virus TI is narrower, more highs in your face, brighter, stronger toxic edgy resonances, more synthetical, artificial sounding

Both are fine, but I like more JP8k here in comparison, it is smoother, mild and light, less edges. Different transients, attacks.
It might be not perfectly matched resonance amounts in both, so Virus is way too sharp, but width is way less in Virus, and more highs, noisier air

I would say DSP56300 emus are identical inside hardware synths vs plugins, but different in analog outputs vs digital-only plugins. Like DA output, cables, noise, your AD input artefact vs. clean plugins with its true bit-perfectly copied algos with with built-in SRC (native SR to DAW project SR).
I would say all hw synth users have slightly different sounds because of different AD, cables, so it is not about synths, but optional user chains, recording stages present in used "after the synth into computer", so we can compare just only "hw with own DA vs clean code" only.
Osirus has different aliasing and artefacts in various set SR, 44.1k is way noisier and artificial when analysing wines, but 48k and higher have less that stuff, quieter and all different. Vavra has more distortions with 48, 96, and less with 44.1, 88.2 as I tested long ago. I
Improving their SRC will give closer to perfect result, but still already fine. Don't know about matched OsTIrus vs TI digital outputs, but there are also options in plugin to set your own quality.

I think they are 100 percent matched in code, instructions, operations (might be some small bugs in sync, midi, might be DSP bugs, it is still beta with tons of always improving and fixing something etc), but sonically it is closer to 100 percent (AD input of interfaces, DA output from hw synths, cabling and plugins with SRC). May be about 99 plus-minus. From atomic to very small but still. Subtle nuances.
In any case, while mixing, the sound will be always reworked, reprocessed, so not a problem.

Not even close to 1:1, people comment about Zenology. Do they (Roland) think they got it close enough that they are just skipping the JP? I am not a fan of that plugin at all. There are a few Korg synths they are doing the same thing with.

Fun Fact: The JD800 waveforms of teh Plugin are NOT 100% the same as the original. I co0kmparted them after multisampling my 800 before sale. But the patches sound similar to me so what.

DAC and cables are minimal, it was discussed a million times on the DSP56300 server.

you can achieve the DAC and the cable sound by adding post effects.

like i wrote it could be the actual code is missing and decompiling is a very big task for an architecture which is not standard.

Zenology Supersaw is just crap. there was a good meme in one of the Bad gear episodes about it.

yeah its too bad that the chip is undocumented. there's probably no way to just dump what a chip does i have no idea. i really appreciate the hard work that went into the virus synths emulation although i have to wonder if its truely 1 : 1 or not meaning i wonder if some of the code was more or less guessed or substituted. i could be wrong though. the other problem is even if the 4 or 5 chips could be emulated it would be like running 5 virus ti's at once which isn't impossible with today's high end cpu's but it would be definitely cpu heavy.

What is it about that special sound of the supersaw compared to other synths ? What makes it soooo special?

Maybe we can mantion Chro-8080 which is a Reaktor ensemble made by one dedicated guy called Jasper. Or there is Navira which is tries to emulate Virus and JP in 1 vst.
Adam Szabo, creator of the Viper also working now on a JP-8000 emulation. I think thats gonna be our the best bet as the closest JP emu if its get released.

In other hand I have them both (8000, and 8080) and I think Diva is a great plugin, when we talk about JP sounds.

3 weeks ago Space Echo got released on Roland cloud, and below the youtube release video of it there is a request comment about the JP-800 cloud version.

    The answer was:
"Great suggestion! A JP-8000 would be a great addition.
We appreciate this feedback and I'll be sure to pass it along for you."

Nothing, it just sounds thick. The fact that Roland spent time optimizing the stacking of 7 detuned saw oscillators make it noteworthy.

But make your own supersaws, start stacking sawteeth and you'll get something interesting at the very least.

Yeah thats how I do it and miss nothing. Avenger, Phaseplant, Serum can even craete much more interesting sounds which teh JP can't.

I had one, 8080, for years, heavily overrated. Especially since I have been able through DSPEMU to use some of the contemporary alternatives from that period, it doesn't come close to Viruses and Microwaves. 'T was a very limited synth indeed.

i'd definitely prefer a jp 8000 even the hl2 ost was made with it look into it. i looked at a jp 8000 on ebay its only $1000 used shipping included so that's not a bad deal actually.. might have to jump on it
