As most of you might already know, Intel f'ed up gen 13 und gen 14 desktop cpus.

    https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-com...says-damage-is-irreversible-no-planned-recall

CPUs become unstable and might take irreversible damage. Bios and Microcode updates might help, but could reduce performance. And even after updates noone knows what live expectancy your CPU really is going to have.

    This is really bad.

// Edit // As far as I know, this does not apply to mobile CPUs.
So people with Intel based laptops do not have to worry

I'm wondering if it's a good time to buy Intel shares. Or wait a few weeks longer and buy the whole company.

I think AMD's gonna be the workhorse-on-a-budget-solution for a long time going forward. I still haven't changed back here at home.

They told all 13th and 14th gen are affected but they mainly, from the retex so far, fucked up their high end i9 .
i7 are usually safe and all i5 but one , the i5 13400, have no problem at all

    Temporary fix in BIOS:
    Manually limit speed to 5,2Ghz
Manually limit CPU Voltages to 1.3v (or 1.296v)
    Disable E Cores (optional?)

    Just to keep it safe..

New BIOS/microcode releases fix things related to power delivery,
but don't seem to address the base problem of it going out of spec..

    I'm was running the i9 14900KF, I am affected.

Contacted Intel UK last week, they have agreed to replace the CPU under warranty.

Bought a 12th gen i5 to keep me going until theres a definite fix and a stable bios I can update to.

Been suffering with blue screens for a couple months, thought it was just a bad bios update, updated my bios, still would get random blue screens, but not as often, this last week, I cant even load up a full project anymore without a blue screen, I cant shut down my PC without a blue screen. So now I am running an i5 12400F.

That's rough! Good thing that you could replace it under warranty. Seems like most tech companies usually do their darndest to not replace or repair bad products under any circumstances, so I'm a bit shocked to hear that Intel actually have been treating somewhat well.

I'm still on an 8th gen i7 so no problems for me. Don't think I'll go the Intel route when I upgrade though.

I was thinking about going the intel route, but I'm glad I delayed the purchase until the end of the year.
And, apparently, I think I'll go with AMD!

How can you imagine a monster company like Intel will not react to this momentary flaw?
Best time to buy Intel shares.

Exactly - these super mega monster corps have it all thought out. They've accounted for every possibility. Intel has dozens of backup plans hidden away in some drawer somewhere in the CEO's office and they're going to unleash at least one of those... any day now...!

Just like banks have all these securities, assets and clever backup plans. The financial system has never shown signs of instability.

I mean, making plans B, C and D is what any sane and financially responsible person would do over the span of 40 years with the kinds of profits Intel used to make ... right?

Just look at how Intel's trove of plans-for-a-rainy-day keeps all these upstarts at bay - Apple, ARM, AMD, TSMC, NVidia, Samsung... any day now...!

Intel didn't have a plan D, C, or B. There was always only ever plan A - and it failed - and then it failed again and again - and they're still fleshing out something resembling a plan B.

Intel is about 18 months away from being kept afloat by yearly injections of billions of taxpayer money for the next decade or two. And they're already sucking on the free money hose in much of the western world (chips act in the US/EU).

I was using intel until 2 years ago, than i switched to AMD because, at the moment, it is more stable and secure

Besides of the technical fuckup, there's also the Physical aspect of it..

Apparently Intel CPUs are of inferior manufacturing quality because > they're not made in TSMC.

They seem to be growing in the Foundry business tho,
so it's probably a matter of time until they figure it out, and actually manufacture for others with usual warranty..

Even some shareholders are suing them.
I'm so sad for Intel I just throwed a party last Friday

Too bad Nvidia has no competition. But I'm a patient old fuck... :disco:

    Classic.
But can we seriously imagine Intel going bankrupt?
    No.
    So it will raise afterwards.

I will re-up this thread next year, same day, just for fun.

Intel had also a counting probem with their first Pentiums. They had a kind of Bios fix. (end 199x)

Is it true that laptops are not affected? I didn't even realise the CPU in a laptop is different. Shame on me!!
