can wholeheartedly recommend SoX for foobar...was the missing piece of the puzzl

 

A simple and reliable way to compare mp3 decoders is to take ~two seconds of some well encoded 320kbps mp3 file with double bass and percussion (jazz, for instance). [You can cut the chosen part losslessly with mp3 DirectCut.]
Then decode it in WAV format in chosen players/DAWs with their built-in decoders, and then play the WAVs in A/B mode in a quality player of your choice (I do it in Signalyst HQ player) and listen carefully.
The differences might be subtle, or not quite so subtle, but they are always there.

 

I realize mp3 format is anathema on this forum but sometimes that's all there is. Any recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks!

 

Unfortunately, this encoder doesn't work straight away with the latest dbpoweramp releases because the newer releases install the 64bit app and it has trouble reading 32bit codecs.
