I'm curious what kind of samples you know that pretty much anyone has used in your genre of production.
I'll start of with EZ Drumkit from Hell's Snare and Kick .
That shit is straight up PTSD inducing to me.

The song actually has really great songwriting but I literally can't listen to it due to the drums.
Once you hear it you literally can't unhear it .
I would not say that the sample sounds bad but it's immediately recognizeable.

for me, it is none of them. But if it is something that has been in other tracks, and nothing new is done with it; it will be boring use of it. Usually they will end up sounding very dated, but i'm not keeping a running list of them. This used to be much worse than it is today; because of the amount of sample packs being released now.

 

And the winner is: The Amen Break...

 

The Lex Luger drum kit and/or a klaxon going off.

 

There's things like dialog from movies like THX 1138 ("What's wrong?") which I literally used myself this week...

not sure if its just me i have noticed people overusing blast beats... some things are to be used SPARINGLY.. And i 3rd the Amen Break sample, i can think of plenty of genres that sample played a big part of

 

The amen break definitely wins. Think break is another, funky drummer, impeach the president as well. Theres probably 100 or so well known and routinely used breaks.

In general?
The fcking orchestra hit. I really hate it.

 

That one is thankfully dead at the moment as it was really overdone in the late 80's.

But I know there will be a retro revival of this one, I know. I'm afraid of it but there will, it's was just too popular.

 

Came to think of it: During 2018/19 or so I was sick of snaps. They were everywhere, as if they had replaced snares. Then over the course of a year or so they just were almost gone, thankfully.

Clearly enough. It's just like if one always scractches the same part of his skin. It begins to get red and itchy.

On the other hand it's not the questioin what an engineer or a producer thinks but the average audience. They won't recognize any details.
So if ther is an overuse of a given collection will stay unclear but there is an overuse of classes of samples like claps, shouts, upl/downlifts etc. that even average audience will recognize.

I've heard a lot of badly produced songs with miserable samples in the charts here where I live esp. the last 25 years. But no one gives anything about my thoughts. They sell

In the sixties and seventies - great music, great producers, engineers from my perspective - only professional producers/engineers were able to produce for labels. Normal people could not even take a look on those $500K+ consoles.

Did anyone complain that a lot of musicians did use the same (hardware) snares, basedrums, Splash ..., back in the day?
In the end the audience only defines what is monetary succesful art.

BTW In the "classic" musik epoche: Mozart must have thought that these constant trills and recitativos were getting on his dick.
He then did it differently and had great success. I'm sure the "greats" of the time threw up when they heard the name Mozart. "Badly produced, wrong orchestration of the opera etc. pp."
