I found this very helpful indeed, it's a technique I had no knowledge of but after watching this video I'm probably going to start hearing it all over the place and I'll probably use it myself.

yea No Home Record is cool. The Collective (2024) is more pop. I also like Kesha Gag Order - 2023.

Chromatic Mediant is not a complicated method. It is simple. This tool was mostly used in the romantic era, but it is not used much now. The reason goes back to the non-diatonic sound. It is usually used in surprise moments. Every tool should be used in appropriate places otherwise it won't make the intended effects and it's the job of composer to find those moments and usable tools to intensify them.

Now, for example, listen to this song. It has a sweet melody. If you insert the above tool into it, it will lose its sweetness and taste almost bitter.

When I create a chord progression, I always just think what chord would go nice with this chord, and just follow that to see where it goes. If I have a melody, of course I choose chords that support or contrast that melody depending on where it is in the song and what I'm trying to do musically.

The nice thing about composing on a guitar, is its not all about the chords, it can be about the technique like slurring one chord into another or percussive use of chords by striking the strings, pull offs etc. as well as use of fx like echo, delay, octaves etc.

I could see on a piano it might be handy to have premade chord progression and just transpose it all over the keyboard, handy finger execise and it keeps the neighbors from going insane..

To me... I don't know, but I think using formulas is a cheat. Writing should be about what your mind wants to hear. :dunno:

Most of the things in music are absolute rules, but the way they are used is relative. This is exactly what we should consider in our music. We must know what to use where. Learning how to use the absolute rules of music and how and where to apply them takes a lot of time to learn them. If we do not consider it necessary to learn them or if we use other methods, we will not understand what exactly is the essence of music.

There are many ways to understand and use the rules of music, but in the end what is important is that these rules must be followed, otherwise we will not get what we want from music. The methods that are taught to people on YouTube or educational videos are mostly methods that end in short music. A simple short chord progressions while complete music requires very long ideas that are never taught. And if these long ideas are not discovered and applied, controlled and thought-out music cannot be made.

For example, consider a long series, several seasons are connected. And also a one-minute advertising teaser that has only a simple idea inside. Making long music, like making a series, requires complete mastery of all parts of music. In the past, serials were much more meaningful than today's movies and serials, because in the past, despite the lack of many modern tools and technologies, the creators of serials used techniques that enabled them to create long ideas. But unfortunately, our current music has become orgasmic. It means that it should start and end so quickly. This quick start and finish and short beginning and end make applying long ideas a big challenge.

Learn as much as you can. The more you learn, the better you can make later. Of course, provided that you learn correctly. Learning music properly is very important. What you learn and who you learn from are important.

its quite easy to make long music, its much more difficult to make long interesting and pleasing music. It is indeed about putting in the time and effort to not only learn and apply ideas, but also to appreciate the ideas in others compositions. Listening to Genesis taught me a lot about how long form music could be entertaining, rather than something like Hawkwind et al, where its just a series of noises, sometimes musical, but often not.

Though my music sounds nothing like Genesis, I still enjoy listening to the albums up to Wind and Wuthering. "Blood on the rooftops" still is applicable to the current news and contemporary society and a damn nice song as well.

And I flat guarantee when Hackett wrote that he was not thinking in terms of theory, rules, or what "should" be the next chord change in terms of some established school of thought. He was simply applying his absorbed knowledge of music that he had picked up through the years and doing what sounded good to him.
(I have written some long epics through the years with Genesis as a definite influence...)

It is possible to analyze with roughly good approximation the thought that was going through the mind of this composer, but what is important is that everyone should find their own path. As I said, the rules of music are absolute, but the way they are applied is relative. How someone decides to use those rules depends on their individual decisions. Maybe someone is completely unaware of those rules, which is fine. But what is certain is that the more a person knows, the more he can produce better works. But to think that one can always make long pieces without thinking and relying on the ear is a bit far from reality. The reality of music is very complicated and requires experience and thought. Without the help of these, it is not possible to produce long pieces easily.

Oh is this something that will be true in 100 years? According to your other thread literally nothing is absolute.
