I first heard him on Saturday Night Live in the the late 70's and found it funny for a Jewish guy to wear a cowboy hat (I'm from NYC and never saw Jews wearing anything but baseball hats, yarmakas or those hats the orthodox dudes wear.

He was a total trip.

I was never into his music, but his books are all funny as hell. Also his commentary on the first season of Tales from the Tour Bus (highly recommended!) was gold.

Besides, the guy ran for the governor of Texas with a slogan "Why the hell not?" and how can you not love that?

I once had a chat with Ted Nugent after a concert back in 2006, when they both ran for governor of Texas and I asked what he thinks of Kinky and Ted just smiled and chugled : " He's a funny old hippie!"

I stumbled accross his books at a library in Iceland in the late 90s. I think it was Elvis, Jesus & Coca Cola. You can't really just walk past such a title. They were trippy, humorous detective novels. Seemed like a cool guy. never heard his music. RIP.
