within the VST3 folder you can arrange the plugins (VST3s) as you like. In my experience.

Sure, but depending on your DAW that might not do anything.

Most VST3 plugins are categorized by metadata inside the plugin, so you'd probably be better off using the tools in the DAW itself.

This will not directly help, because Logic uses AU plugins not VST. There is even a program called AUganizer that is made for this overall purpose. But the only way to actually do this in Logic is to go to the Plugin Manager. There is a tiny grey + button that a user would never notice, or know it's function. Anyway, it adds a new Category to the plugin manager's list. By adding a new category, you can then move the plugins you want into each one, and label them whatever way you want. They could not make it less obvious if they were trying.

Maybe there is some dumb trick or obscure feature like this in your DAW. Manually making folders might not do anything at all. Many DAW applications will not look more than one folder deep to find plugins.

Ableton (version 12 onwards) let's me assign custom tags to them and then navigate using those, there's additional "color" tag favourite system which can be used.

But... not everybody likes it, and the biggest thing here is that Ableton is probably not what you want, unless you're already using it.

Actually, Burrrito (it's one of the few words spelled with three Rs as per Cambridge Dictionary) would categorize any vst plugin that can create drum rolls or stutter effects.

A workaround for DAWs that aren't able to categorize VST3s may be to organise them into folders on the drive then scan the drive with something like Snap2HTML (if you want to browse nested folders) or print/save the folder contents to a PDF then use it to find what you're looking for. If you want to try this you might get the best result by making sure every plugin has its own folder then when you print/save only select the folders and not the files (directory structure). When you find what you want just search/filter it in the DAW.

It might be just as quick to type your own list out.

It's far from ideal but it's probably much easier and quicker than browsing an unorganised list in the DAW.

It reminds me of learning to touch-type* which only takes a couple of hours vs hundreds of hours lost by hunting and pecking - put in the work early to save time later.

*I learned in 1980 and I'm very fast, way quicker than I can speak and I never make erorrs - imagine the time I've saved. I can also type more quickly than I can think which I'm sure is very evident to most of you.

Cubase has something called Plug in Manager default you can switch between vender or Category and also lets you create your own collections. the category option isnt that good as alot of venders do not include that info in their meta data and they are all VST3s as thats all Cubase uses these days

Do you mean in the OS file explorer, or in the DAW?

In Windows, I always create folders for each vendor within the VST3 folder.

In DAWs, it varies with various ways of doing it, but most of them allow you to create some form of favourites, custom folders, and so on.

ableton introduced separate categorization of plugins that solves this issue even for vst3

I'm sure most DAWs can do this, but here's something I use constantly in Ableton. Figure out the shortcut keys to your (plugin) browser and it becomes really quick & painless to get to what you want.

For instance, say I want a new MIDI track with MicroTonic and Volcano 3 in it, it's

    ctrl+shift+t (new MIDI track)
    ctrl+f (global search)
type in "micr" (or whatever I need to get to it)
tap down key until I get to MicroTonic
    press enter
    ctrl+f to search again
    type in "vol"
tap down key to find Volcano3
    press enter

To me that's the fastest way of finding and adding anything. I'm a keyboard person though, I hate pixel hunting with the mouse.

Studio One does it. It allows you to create folders (inside the Browser), rename and move them as you like - VST2 or VST3.
