alot of the djs who were famous from working with hiphop mcs and groups are not extremely technical at all. Premiere is another good example of this. They could scratch well enough to record what they needed to, but mostly they just played records and handled the sampling as the basis for the tracks. Like you mention, they were not there to do turtablism, they were there to provide beats for the mcs. It's a totally different thing. You will not find any mention of those kinds of djs on the DMC lists. It would have been a waste of time (and reputation) for most of them to have even entered.

A few years ago, I watched a video of Aoki (and some other DJ) on stage at a festival. The camera was fixed behind the mixer, facing the stage. In other words, their movements on the mixer were front and center. The video displayed that they reached for knobs on the mixer, but never touched a single one. This happened several times a minute

 

Did you know Aoki's dad Rocky Aoki brought sushi into common/popularity to America? Even so, he's not telling this dude what to use:

As with anything that is digital the price point of new technology will decrease over time. Pioneer decks probably cost 1/5 of the price they sell them at.
