....of course the slate air release brought me to ask this . only other air plug i kno is abey road brilliance pack .
here is az's Elvenwarerliv's explanation (thx again )on what slate air does :

While the EQ curves from Fresh Air is very easy to recreate in a digital linear EQ, the added harmonics from the plugin is what makes it sound slightly different in quality. The curve is just a curve, but added saturation does change the overall sound along with it. Same goes for some Pultec EQ plugins for example (Like UAD). And it isn't really a significant change to your ear.

To answer your questions regarding EQ curves only:

In Fresh Air, the "Mid Air" knob at full effect, is like an overall 1dB boost from 0 to 1.2khz with attenuated presence around 2khz, and 2.5dB high shelf boost probably around 3.5khz with a 0.5dB bell boost to round up around 20khz

The "High Air" knob does almost the same thing, but is alot more aggressive in boosts on high frequencies, and the presence cut shifts from 5khz to 3khz the more you apply..

Already at full effect, we get a 2dB boost from 0 to 200hz, a narrow -5.2dB bell cut around 2.9khz, and a whoppin' 20dB high shelf boost maybe around 5.4khz.

Of course, you would have to adjust Q's which would vary.

    I hope this is helpful.

    ------

whats your take on the subject ?

I get an eq, set it around 17 to 20k and I increase that frequency. Ding, air. It's not really rocket science :dunno:

Two of the most commonly used are Eoisis Air EQ, and Maag EQ-4. Maag also included an "air band" button on the Parallel EQ side of Maag Magnum-K. But my usual "air trick" in Logic is to enable the stock Channel EQ, turn on the 20K lowpass node all the way to the right side; and instead of using it to dip attenuate I drag it up to about 10 dB, with 48K per octave and adjust it while listening. Sometimes I will add it with Claro but I don't really put enough importance to it that I just start adding additional plugins to do it. Channel EQ works for me in about 90% of all instances.

staying away from the noise and pollution helps you get all the air you need

back to the topic, i never liked the slate fresh air. It's either sounding too harsh or can be easily achieved with simple eq. Magnum-K is way better.

Thanks for quoting me right there :p

Ps: I personally find Fresh Air to be just a toy in the box. I'm having a hard time hearing the benefit when the eq curve for the presence/air itself is enough.

Open an EQ, make a high shelf band at around 12k. Congratulations, you've just created air :guru:

This is basically my approach, because I do not do this often and don't find it all that important to me. But is the collective opinion that plugins with "air band" as a parameter or "feature" are just scammy plugins?

I don't know that I would go so far as to call them scammy, they do a thing and if that thing works for what you're doing then that's great. But I've never really found any kind of plug-in that has an element of saturation or harmonic boost (ala the old BBE) to it that didn't do more harm than good to my ears, at least for the kind of music that I make. So maybe not scammy, but unnecessary would be the word I'd use; if I need "air" I literally just use eq. And it seems like if they're not using saturation or some additional thing to create and/or hype their air then eq is all they are so why use a special plug-in?

is the maag eq air band a shelf ?
    ----
i dont think e.g. a eq8 shelf sound as good as abbey road brilliance pack in some cases .
    -----
maybe i remember wrong but i think a akai s1100 has very airy topend.

That's what I mean, and it's either the subject of the thread or very closely related to it. The options are really "a regular EQ", or "a certain plugin (eq anyway). If people are hawking those products and they are basically useless, or pretending to do more than really do; that's close enough to snake oil for me.

I don't know, that really depends on what plugins we are talking about, most of the ones I've tested and analyzed through Plugin Doctor impart wide shelves on the audio. It's usually a simple process so I wouldn't buy a plugin just to do this. After all, it's basic equalization.
