Similarities in songs (My original song vs Well-known artist) - help

Discussion in 'Music' started by Vincent Price, Jun 15, 2024.

  1. Hello

I am working on an original song, and while I have been working on it, one of my friends who has listened to it said it sounds familiar. Today, he sent me a song on YouTube and it has the same sort of drum beat and same guitar pluck style.

I am starting to panic as this will be my first proper release onto streaming and music platforms via a distribution service, and worrying that the artist of the other song could hear it and pursue a legal route.

Is there any legal standing for the same sort of guitar rhythm and drum beats etc?

    Thanks

I don't think so. Mostly because who looks for similarities in songs across the platforms are robots.
but in worst case scenario, if you can prove this is your original idea that you started from scratch, then you have a defence.

  4. I also have, a bridge section and the first part of the lyrics on the bridge section have the same sound as Miley Cyrus "I can buy myself flowers", but then the rest sounds fine. Would there be an issue there? (Obviously they are my lyrics)

There is an infinitesimally small chance of this happening. But if it's causing you this much distress, why not just change the offending parts? But then, what happens if the changed parts now inadvertently sound similar to a song you are unaware of?
The only possible outcome would be litigation, a tarred reputation as a plagiarist, and financial ruin. What a dilemma!

Or... just release your song as it is on the streaming platforms, and hope you get streams in the number of hundreds rather than tens.
