I'm assuming it is, but more specifically, with a Third Edition now available, is the 2013 issued Second Edition still relevant?

What are the main differences between the Second and Third Edition?

Second edition is actually from 2007. Third edition is from 2014. The differences would be whatever technological advancements had been made in those years. The principles should be exactly the same.

If I was close enough to Bob Katz to hear him fart I would listen intently and try to gather as much information from it as I possibly could...because Bob's shit is the best.

    * @Lois Lane measures LUFS of Bob's fart *

I wonder what kind/ratio of compression he uses. Maybe just enough to colour the sound.

I hope he doesn't use much compression because he can colour not only the sound.
Too much brown noise = catastrophe

The ignorant say lumpy, others, textured. You've obviously not read the book.

i know that 15 pages pdf one from 2001 or so and it feels somewhow imcomplete and written from inside a filter bubble.

however, it contains quite a few things already that are important for beginners to understand.

starting with people´s wrong prejudices and half-knowledge about a topic is a very good method to explain or outline it.

when somebody asks me "how do i have to use an EQ best?" and i tell him that you use it only when required and that you should use your ears - and he continues to stack 15 EQs and 22 compressors in all his tracks and still asks how to use them in this situation, i leave the discussion.

MIXERMAN is getting on the next level bandwagon watch his channel altought he is not a mastering engineering the way he mixes ...
Its to actually bring everything within the mix to the ball park and even get better loudness than any sorcery on the masterbus by any mastering dude...

I've posted the exchange earlier post with Him and Ian Shepherd quite facsinating

and since Mixeman has started a brand new channel on youtube and it's quite sick

Check'him out... but the book was there also when he was mixin in the 80's 90's and 2000's

But now he is on to somethin and I think I'm on the same page as him

I must say, if someone stacks 15 EQs and 22 compressors on their tracks, YOU may be the one who could learn a few things from them.

That's why old recordings sound great, everything passed through those lovely Neve/API/SSL transformers on the mixing desks.

it all started with "live racks" and similar situations where you can insert plug-ins in unlimited numbers.

in stage 1 everyone uses a different "best EQ of all" and then they discuss about their tools and tell each other about their "best EQ of all".
in a later stage all of them now have 15 different "best EQs" because each of them want to have everything the others have.
and when you have 15 "best EQs" the best mastering procedure is probably to use all of them at once, because more is better. or because they said so in a youtube video which someone declared to be the best video of all. (including instructions for "better loudness")

but my favorite moment about all this nonsense is that people regulary first buy 15 EQs, then ask around how to use them, and finally ignore the answers they get and keep doing what they want.

or how katz would put it, start to explain you that the sampling theorem would not work as intended.

If this is the only advice you're giving them, your guy is probably continuing to stack EQs and Compressors because he doesn't know when they're required or what "use your ears" actually means. Both are common amongst fifty other cut-rate answers that are thrown to beginners either as some ingrained elitist mantra, or as a blow-off when someone doesn't feel that the person is worth the time it'd take to give them any real help.
If I sound salty it's because when I first started years back, as musician coming into production, I got the same pile of vapid answers from every old-ass, hardware-worshipper on Gearsnobs, all who couldn't even be bothered to recommend any audio production books or videos over any others because [insert deluge of pretentious phrases here.] I would've preferred a bare-faced, honest "Fuck off" to listening to veteran nobodies preen themselves instead of taking sixty seconds to point someone with legit questions in the right direction.
