You can use any source into a talkbox. A good mix between fundamentals and harmonics is usually a good recipe, like a distorted guitar or supersaw + some noise on a synth.

I may be able to help you. I do a lot of talkboxing both with guitars & synths.
While it is true that many synths can be used used, the most famously & widely
used synth is the Yamaha DX-100 as used by Roger Troutman with Zap. Of course,
DX-100 patches can be loaded into any Yamaha 4opFM synth. Personally, I prefer
the TX81Z as it's not only built like a tank but, IMHO, sounds slightly edgier due to
different DACS. The good news is that NI's FM8 and DiscoDSP's Phantom will import
Yamaha 4opFM sysex patches. More good news is that I have compiled a collection
of these patches including a full set programmed specifically for talkboxing. The
talkbox set includes some of my own sound designs & some of Roger Troutman's
    original patches.

    Dig it:

If you have FM8 or Phantom, ( or a hardware Yamaha 4opFN synth), and would like
to have this collection I would be happy to share it.

    PM me for a link!

    Cheers......Trip
