I see, didn't know that he is that involved, I'm aware Albini was involved in most of Neurosis records but I never knew he helped them shaped the sound as Albini style is always record/produce the band as is, like how he always claimed that he's there to capture them. Maybe he downplayed his contribution as always. Now that you mentioned it I don't really listen to Sovereign EP (most of Neurosis releases arent in Spotify) and I never really pay attention to the multimedia CD, never knew it exists. Dunno much pre A Sun That Never Sets days. Saw some good ones on discog just now. Got some of their LPs I bought long time ago, forgot the last time I gave em a spin. Lol. You dig Hydra Head stuff too ? Just wondering if you are more towards the "metal" or the "post".

For a guy who gave rein to the bands that he recorded,
You sure knew how to lead that horse to water.

    RIP Steve!

Always loved that cough at :15. Best take...keep it...real.

Starting your letter to the biggest band on the planet at that time with "When I talked to your frontman I was doing another record and I thought one day off before starting yours would be enough" is an amazing thing, what a legend lol.

Always loved his true punk ethos mixed with encyclopedic knowledge of recording technology. And he might have come off as a know-it-all dick sometimes, but his business ethics were truly admirable, and in an industry infested with the worst kinds of leeches and scavengers in the world, that's saying A LOT.

And he looked like he would never age one day over 21. Such sad news.

Apologies for spamming the thread (can you tell the man and his work mean at lot to me?), but apparently he died while working at hist studio.

Is this not really a fitting end, and a really Albini thing to do? Left with his boots on,

First time I had to record live drums at a studio I had zero practical experience and was shitting myself.

In the morning I ingested as much Albini videos on the topic as I could.

I'm not saying I became an expert or anything, but I managed to get a more than decent drum sound that day.

I'll always be thankful for his teaching passion. The guy was a true gem.

So true. But the tone of this thread will not change that - all it'll do is illustrate the beautiful diversity we have here. Thoughtful, sensitive beings that we all are. Flaming, shitposting and all that side of things and the self-satisfied even-handed smug. All of you unite in these moments of poignancy to push your lonely egos up against the screen hoping for some kind of resolution like dark eels thrashing in the void.

Albini was good, but he wasn't the font of knowledge, there are plenty of other people way before Albini that knew how to record.
Start reading Tape Op magazine. That guy that designed and set up the Power Station in NYC for instance, or the lady that was Prince's in house engineer for years who left and got a degree and wrote a book on pyscho-acoustics in the human brain, how we hear music etc.

Shit look at records from the 70's - youll see a shit ton of recurring names of engineers on some of the best lp's ever made. track down those names, I'll bet you find a metric shit ton of articles and interviews describing how and why choices were made.

Now I remember why I got shitfaced last night. :)

R.I.P. Steve. I love your shit. Always did. I don't know how this will come across, and I really loved tha man, but it's a nice death, or yeah - fitting. Too young, though. :( Keith and Mick sent their condolences.

Death is a race in which nobody wants to win...
