that movie is fantastic! the atmosphere is so dense, the anxiety, the fanaticsm and the genius is so well displayed.
    Love this movie.
Even the resolving scene of the whole issue is kinda hard to imagine.

i think a bit social isolation from time to time, like 1-2 days here and then, doesnt harm anyone.

the path to sanity is all about a balance.
everyone needs some alone time, some people more, some people less
but if we want to stay sane, we also need some company some time, with other people

I know a guy from South Korea he also told some stories about insane work culture. They have a word for working yourself to death. Plus the guilt trip they are send to if they can't get work. I saw something about young Japanese people who sleep in those "capsules", because they can't afford an apartment and then they hold a sign of a company all day somewhere. Established manga artists have an insane work volume like 10 pages a day or something. Work isn't over after the bell and they go drinking with colleagues, so they are not seen as anti-social. Everything else is second place like finding a partner or hobbies. Working lots of hours from home here is a pony ride compared to that.

You couldn't be more right. And there's more.
I recently took a look at South Korea's culture, in some ways the new Japan. It's similar in some ways, different in others. But overall as stressful if not even more than the Japanese.

All of this is no secret. You can find trustworthy videos or articles on the web. As long they don't do it in Japanese/Korean people can talk about (almost) all the issues.

This "capsules" thing I've seen it even on animes. They're like truck containers.

I 100% agree with this. For some people isolation doesn't cause troubles. And there're some jobs that require that, like some nocturnal lonely ones.

But for the majority of us, at least myself, it's bad. And when you go out it kind of re-calibrates yourself.
And you might end wondering "why two days ago at 3AM I was so worked up about this little thing". Or the opposite.

I think people also have a different "bio rhythm". Some guys like to work very early to get it over with and have time for other things, others like me "burn the midnight oil". There is something going on with the neuro chemistry at night.
I heard from a podcast with galaxy brain John Carmack, who wrote the DOOM engine as you may know, that he works no longer than 8 hours and then stops, because anything after that isn't "his best work".

I've read there's a phenomenon in Japan where old housewives get major depression because when their husbands retire and start spending time at home they realize they don't know each other at all so they feel like their privacy has been invaded by a total stranger.

That really is depressing. Even more when the husbando also doesn't know his wife and becomes an audiophile and gets into white jazz.

    That's a thing :deep_facepalm:
Take a look at this, I checked the auto-subs i English and they're quite good:

The guy interviewed is one of two Spaniard guys who lived in Japan and made YT videos ranting about the issues there.
This one lived about 6 years, the other one still lives after about 10 years.

Isolating oneself from 99% of people is the best there is a lovely one percent of people who are worth communicating, life is short There is not enough time to spend with people who steal from each other, f... each other, liars, two faces, dumbs......

In the early 2000s, one of the most messed up things (for me anyway) was Nasubi. A Japanese guy they locked up for a year and a half in a room with quite literally nothing. Not even clothing. The idea was for him to survive, including his food, on winning magazine sweepstakes alone. They streamed much of this live. Pretty groundbreaking technologically for the time. Didn't take long before he started talking to himself or objects, dancing naked for hours when he finally won a PlayStation, etc.

Big Brother, but extreme isolation instead of extreme socialising.

These days, Japanese society is so old, Japan is completely dead outside of hot spots in major cities. You can go from high tech super dense, super busy street to Eastern European only-elderly-people-left tumbleweed-village in 2 blocks in a city of millions.

Japan is an island, several actually. It's not like anywhere else in the world, and that is a good thing. we are becoming homogenized.a single culture bereft of imagination and variation. Our fascination with Japan is they are different and have managed to remain different, than the western nations.

Japan is beautiful and terrible by equal measure, as is the rest of the world.

I am glad Japan is different from the western nations, and I am glad they make art and music to share with the world.

The problems of social disintegration we see in Japan are magnified in our eyes because it is unlike what we are used to therefore we can see it more plainly. The same things are happening within all nations boundaries, we are mostly blind to it

Man, this thread is so depressing. I feel like we should better create a thread about the best instant ramen noodles to lighten the mood.
