    Tried with waveshaping (distortion), FM/AM sub./add. synthesis, using multiple filter types, multiple waveform variations, unison algorithms etc, yet I still can't figure this one out...

    the distortion at the top end of the sample sounds like an emu. But that doesn't mean you couldn't make it, or very close; with some software.

    isnt a reese just a carefully stacked bunch of saws with a bit stereo panning.

    i think Sylenth1 has a good starting reese.
    for the distortion, might try your DAW distortion plugin?
