It doesn't produce loud artifacts, low cpu and a nice control of the dynamic range on the threshold. It's one of those magic stock tools like Avid's Lofi, Studio One MixFX or the Cytomic Glue on the Ableton

Some things have been un-iLoked, but mostly just on PC in the past 2 years or so. Both Black and Orange are great sounding plugins, but they are aimed at pro audio users and they are priced like it. If you have a lot of paying work, the time something like Orange might save you getting the same result another way would pay for itself very quickly. Gold Clip can be really a hard clipper if you want. Orange seems softer and more forgiving, and not as sibilant or something. I set a render to -0.1 in it in Logic and thats exactly what got printed. 0 overshoot.

it's on sale for another 3 weeks. I think these demos are great. No hissing bs, beeping, nothing. Full use for free for 30 days and either buy it or not. Sonnox are the same thing. Orange with the 64 bit Inflator in front of it, adjust and hit bounce.

So, I conducted a simple test comparing orange clip and standard clip. Both clippers were in the initial state, with one phase flipped, of course. I inserted a utility before these two to boost the gain, and they almost completely nullified each other? There is a small difference, but I have to turn my speakers to extremely loud volumes to even hear it. Is my test flawed, or is this really just almost the same as the standard clip's initial state? To be honest, I can't believe it.

There is an audible difference, for example, between standard and gold clips. That's why I decided to buy gold. But orange? This seems strange to me.

    edit:
So i found out why, orange clip does not init correctly at -4.4, when I insert it, it shows -4.4 but in reality it's hard clipping. Just when I move the orange knob, the processing starts. (Ableton 12, Windows 11, orange 1.0.8)

All else being equal, all hard clippers should null perfectly.

Soft clippers differ in the softness of their shape, with softer shapes resulting in more saturation of transients, while also compressing transients more and compressing them earlier. Harder clipping shapes preserve transient dynamics better, while saturating transients less.

Because clipping shapes usually only affect the very loudest transients (eg. snares), there's usually very, very, VERY little difference between any two clippers of similar softness.

Some creative clippers use 'weird' shapes, eg. resembling sines, but those can usually not be driven very far before going spastic.

If you want something that tries to improve on traditional clipping, spectral clippers could be of interest.
