My intro to synths was with a Casio MT-520 back in 1987... it was a gift from my grandparents and the beginning of my addiction.

But my first professional synth was an Alesis QS6 which I purchased new back in 1998

D50 was my second synth, brand new when released. I have always regretted selling it. Such a beautiful keybed. Makes me sad to see all the beaten up D50s on ebay.

for me it wasnt a hardware synth.

i think it was the 3xOSC in FL 3.5.6.

if there was a wrapper for 3xosc - FLi to VST2 or VST3, i would totally use in Ableton. its such a lovely aliasing synth with the the 90s sound.

absolutely nothing wrong with this though cause a hardware synth or drum machine / sampler can be a pretty big financial and time commitment.

personally i had to force myself to only use fl studio as a midi clock and audio recorder for a long time once i got my rd8 and pro 800 because sending midi from fl studio was just me skipping actually learning the hardware workflows

    Mine was this:

2babc2f265d9ea1234bb6a9e31141cb1.jpg Bought it around 1997 and still have it. Not a proper synth, I know, but it had 4 tracks - one for drums and the other 3 for all those a hundred and something General Midi bass, piano, bell, string, synth, etc. sounds that we all hate today lol. I could program entire tracks on it! Even "played" it through its "pads" lol.

I just remembered, the first synth that I ever used in a recording was my next door neighbor's Casio MT-35. I had that Tascam 246 4 track cassette recorder and wrote a song heavily dependent on that funny little synth called "I Won't Wait On The Line At The Limelight". That year in 1985 was the year that I drove a yellow cab in NYC at night for the freaky experiences and my memoirs. Late at night a few times I tried waiting for a fare of partyers coming out but "The fairs are short and not worth the gas". Fun times! I used the cheesy drums and a few sounds to write the song.
