both of these are considered 6 stroke roll

    i am confused..

if someone says play a 6 stroke roll, how can u know what to play if u can change the rhythm and still be a 6 stroke roll?

    i need some clarity

    thanks

first one are 6 hits at equal distance, basically two triplets (you count to 4 but play 6 notes)
second one are paced 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 (you count to 4 again, play first, then two, then two and last note on 4th hit)

if you have some DAW where you can do MIDI, it's much easier to tap those and see+hear how they play

    yes, the first is triplets

the second is 16ths and 32nds

it sounds different in each case

my question is, how do you know which one to play if someone says play a 6 stroke roll? as both are considered a 6 stroke roll

does the 6 stroke roll only refer to the sticking R L L R R L and ignores the rhythm?

    Maybe by asking?

Ignoring the rhythm is not recommened, especially not for drummers. This can lead to an immediate dismission. :winker:

Without any context, someone saying "six stroke roll" just refers to the sticking pattern. If it's written then there's no ambiguity, and if it's in a musical context, the person is probably assuming you'll be able to guess.

1st one is what people usually mean,
if someone tells you what to play, without a context, then ignore them
