I was talking about synth emulations. Like for example 303 emulation.
Take any 303 vst. Can you mod it? Can you remove resistors? Can you add Devil Fish Mod to it?
Can you put waveform switch at the center to turn oscillators off and self oscillate it?
VSTs are very linear you can't do crazy unconvetional things with them.

 

I used a DAW for 15 years. I bought a Tascam MODEL 12 recorder/mixer a month ago. My creativity and new ideas in music increased by an incredible 200% using the hardware synth. Now I only do mastering on PC ...

 

But it was not made for this purpose.

Its not true.....just dont use the presets ...my Advise.....

I tell you a story i recently buyed an MP Controller(Price of 3 Behringer Synths;)) and use it to programm VSTi Patches with it and wtf the VSTi begins to come to life.......and yes this is true....Programm with Mouse is shit....when you have an controller with knobs and see directly what you do ...it beginns to sound better...and I can do really crazy things with VST now...also it makes a difference when you have high resolutions Knobs to programm an OSC it was day and night now

Not everyone have the technical ability to mod a 303, that's why something like the Devil Fish was made (a 303 moded by someone else sold to people who didn't know how to mod themself). Synth emulation aren't made to be moded, because, unlike hardware, you don't have the same room limitation with software, so why mod at 303 emulation when you can download an already moded one. And still use Reaktor to build your own synth. Hardware where modified because it was more convenient and/or cheap, or give the possibility to have something unique that didn't exist. In software, you don't have that limitation.

And the same way you can add/remove stuff in an analog synth, you can rewrite code to add/change/remove function in a synth soft. It's not the same technical ability, but the same way not every can change/modify electronic part, not everyone can code. People bought pre moded 303 so they don't have to do it themself the same way people download plugin (or even Reaktor ensemble) now so they don't have to build it themself.

There's no better or worst thing, just a thing that is more convenient to you but not necessary for someone else. Personnaly I like software cause it's more convenient for me and I don't have the technical ability to fix a Jupiter synth if something go wrong with it, but I know how to fix my computer if it crashe, or build a Reaktor ensemble if needed (but I only do it for fun, because time is precious and I don't want to waist it building/fixing a synth when I make music).

@The Pirate .. I'm not quite sure what this thread was supposed to be, the title and what with Kate Middleton being ratioed as well as getting the middle finger by half the meme-ers disliking the first post, but it's time for me to say...

I love the vsti that I use...Zebra, Diva, Retro 1/5, Surge, Vital, The Legend, Plasmonic, Phaseplant, Chimera (yup) etc, and right now I don't have a piano so Kontakt it is. That being said however, whenever I flip the power switch on the Arturia Polybrute everything feels different and it's like I'm not in Kansas anymore. I can map whatever I want to my controller and command the software synths to do whatever, though playing the Polybrute even with it's basic waveform architecture is so much more engaging to me. Everything is right there in front of me and the mod matrix makes it easy to assign the LFOs, envelopes, Morphée and the ribbon controller (the XYZ pad) and modulation wheel to just about anything. Good sounding Reverb and delay are there too if I want along with modulation effects. I can even write animation to a track in my DAW because of the software controller. The Polybrute definately has it's own color going on but it's one that I like a lot. I'm not ditching my vsti any time soon, but like I did back in the 80's making due with just an ESQ-1 and then a Kurzweil K2500XS in the 90's (a first world joy), if there is electricity to harness I could live with just the Arturia...I'm always inspired and engaged.

I give a zero flying f%++ whether It is a hardware synth or software synth (VSTi, midi keyboard)

I only emphasize how it sounds when playing keys.
