That is sososososo stupid ... piano playing is cheating because someone else has made the patch sound in that one-preset thing? And since 10.000s of years anyone can make music. Look for a shallow tree, beat on it and sing. Bang. Instant hit.

I'm using Cherry Modular for years and I can agree and confirm that Cherry Modular can give you similar vibe and similar non-linear, unpredictable things which results as happy accidents in the way as hardware instruments works. Also VAZ Modular was nice.

But still many other vst plugins are very linear, plastic like in comparison to hardware. Hard to take any happy accident from them.
Or experiment and squize to maximum and achieve something cool, they gives in almost all cases digital harsh except of cool non expected things. Also every piece of same hardware sound different, there is a lot of elements inside which with time are changing, detuning or are faulty. Everything in hardware which it seems to be a disadvantage is an advantage, even limitations. Faulty parts inside gives mojo and uniqness to the sound. While every vst sounds exactly the same, their sound will never change, unexpected things happens rarely, they are souless like. Not to mention that in hardware you can replace some parts, cut some cables and achieve some crazy things, modding it or experimenting. There is so many possibilites. Your hardware instument is really like a member of family or a friend or girlfriend, it has some soul, it is moody sometimes, sometimes it will give you a hard time and don't wanna co-operate with you but most of the time you will be a great team and sometimes you can experiment and change something inside. Also with time you will be older have different mindset, experience, physicall damage, diseases, your body and everything inside you will be older and functioning different and also your instrument will have similar, their parts will be older and it will sound different, and some parts will be broken or sick.
Analog hardware is analog like us and has some soul and mojo. VST plugins no.

If every vst plugin would be like Cherry Audio Modular and have additional backpanel options to tweak and emulate some imperfections and faultiness for some mojo. Then hardware could be thing of the past maybe.
But for now I think hardware is safe

I never in my life would sell any of my hardware.
I'd rather sell my kidney than my hardware! :guru:

I think you are absolutely right at this point, golum (cof)...golum.
I didn't want to admit it, but... limitations stimulates creativity and hardware (almost) always has its own sonic characteristics

There's a significant difference between hit music using a preset and being created entirely from presets. I can't think of one hit record from the latter.

I think it's time for the goat story again...

"I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all."

I had similar mind boggling thoughts but I stopped somewhere between programming and my own drums lol.

I thought creating my own melodies and chord progressions was too much work, so I used AI to generate them. Then, I thought synthesis and programming my own sounds were too much work, so I used presets. Then I thought clicking through hundreds of presets was too much work, so I used samples. Then I found using samples was too much work, so I used sampled loops. Then I found joining together sampled loops was too much work, so I used construction kits. Now, I don't even bother to write anything, I just use someone else's work and call it my own.

I thought this would be about USING your hardware synths as opposed to not using them, like preventing device decay for lack of usage and and the like.

If you got the space and the ca$hy money to acquire them, hardware synths are great. However, if the piece of gear you're looking at is a digital synth, then the essence of that piece has probably already been faithfully reproduced in a vst somewhere along the line. Since digital synths are way easier to copy in that fashion. However, analog synth's are another story. They are not as easy to reproduce faithfully to the original in a digital form and there exists many more snake oil versions of those pieces than their digital counter parts... Not saying that faithful digital reproductions of analog synths don't exist, it's just that they are much harder to get right and true to the original in vst form. That being said there is the space saving and generally less expense associated with the vst side. Vst's live on a digital storage medium not in your physical studio space and can do essentially everything that hardware synths can do dollar for dollar. That's quite an attractive feature for a lot of folks. Most that I know these days who have large collections of hardware synths are legacy from a couple of decades of audio production. The ones who are sporting bunches of brand new synth hardware are usually rich to begin with and have a lot of space to dedicate to admiring how pretty they look...

yeah, maybe we can set a new rule.
if the hardware has a screen on it, it's totally crap, right?
and if the screen is an oled display, oh god... nobody can save you

She is not using monitors because there is too much reverb in the castle.
And of course she is using natural reverb. Castle reverb is the most expensive and the best!

Art is a lie by definition, nothing that artists tell us is actually real. Imagine you're at the theater and the main character dies on the stage: he's cheating you, in reality he's not really dying, it's a fiction and you know it. That’s the moment you try hard to believe in the lie, sometimes you believe it so much so that you start crying.

Cheating on audience (and doing it well) is the essential duty of an artist

No matter what you use, make sure you enjoy it. :)

Making your own instruments and effects can also be fun, on another level. Need soldering and probably metal-woodwork skills, too.
