make one or two offline back ups on some hdds; idk why people say offline drive space is expensive tbh, especially since we're talking about 2tb; wouldn't trust cloud shit;

deleting everything kontakt related is you just throwing work you did at some point for your set of tools; you won't become any purer/professional/grounded if you just delete them.

 

And as we all know, the Romans never had to wait for samples loading either!

 

This is the problem with the "Save everything " logic. None of the items being discussed are irreplaceable. By either new copies of the content when re-downloaded, or re-created with another method; possibly with the added benefit of it being brought "more current".
In a majority of cases, the new updated version of the samples will be better anyway. With software, there are some examples of updates that ruin a good program or version-specific features being added or removed. Backing up unused data is for people who still believe in the "perfect take", and the magic version of some plugin or sample.

You see people trying to track down old stuff all the time. Some sample is "gold" and an emergency to recover it. But then no sooner after its being found; you never hear about it again.

 

I don't like that NI no longer makes synthesizers and just focuses everything on Kontakt libraries.

I am Kontakt-less and Reaktor-less as of about 4 months ago. That's not to say my archives are gone.

 

Get a better computer! Or at least upgrade it with more RAM, better CPU and faster SSD.

 

If I were you, I would keep these samples, because you can always buy a new HDD for samples. I buy one HDD every month for backups already have 24 of them, and I'm not afraid that my system will fail some day

 

I was kind of in the same situation, I've been using it since v2 I think, made lot of stuff with it, but I stop using it naturally 2-3 years ago. I have a dedicated 4go SSD for all soundbank like these, and had to make some room for other stuff (like those giant Toontrack drum bank), so I first made some choice deleting all the older bank, and the one that had a more recent/more useful equivalent.
Kontakt was my go to for orchestral and realistic stuff, but then Spitfire start to make their own player, and I discover the SWAM stuffs, which can give great result with some tweaking, realistic enough for what I do.

I didn't want to delete Kontakt because of this FOMO you talk about, so I put all the bank in an external HDD, for storage, just in case, still accesible to the plugin if I turn it on. I still have Kontakt installed, but I don't use it because I have to turn on the HDD, there's nothing I miss that I can't find somewhere else. I gave me 2 years with this HDD, if during this time I don't need those banks (for older project or "an awesome idea that can't be done without this specific sound") I'll delete them and use the storage for something else. Just because it's cheap to have lot of storage, doesn't mean we should keep everything

Like this I can see if I'm ok with this decision, without any regret. I did the same with Omnisphere before that and now this one is gone for real. I'm doing the same method for lot of plugin so I can have less tool that I barely use and focus on a few one that I really know.
(Kontakt and Omnisphere where the only I had to use this "temporary storage" technique, for the smaller plugin, I just keep an installer)

 

Keep them in a leaded container, a magnetic pulse will erase them all in the blink of an eye.

 

Well if you aren't going to use it, and are convinced you aren't, go ahead and delete it.

I know HDD prices (and SSD's) are not trending the way we like right now, but I've been dealing with similar, and have been using Kontakt since V1, and backed up all my old stuff as I have legacy projects and whatnot, and didn't feel like going through every TB of libraries etc... and wanted just a working system with a 4TB SSD external for that, a few 2tb SSD scratch drives perhaps, and my system. I have all else backed up thrice, and when I travel elsewhere, I have an 18TB drive with those assets that might not have made the cut for my 4TB "sample/asset/libraries" drive there if I need them.

It cost ~$200.

For me, it was worth it, if it's not for you, .. I get it..

I've got more drives then I would like lingering around, but whatever, they are backed up, and going from everything from 5MB drives to 30 to 200GB'ers to now getting 8TB's and 16-18TB's routinely... with a modicum of discipline and whatnot, the 'needed' pile is smaller, and backed up, and the older drives are just extra backups at this point...

But I've cut a lot of plugins out I don't need, and hell, this week I literally made an issue of deleting 100-200GB a day off my "essential 4tb" library drive of nonsense, and it feels good to purge, but unfortunately, (or fortunately), there more likely then not will come a scenario ~for me~ where I need that stuff, and I'd rather have it. Not the same for all, and I get it. But yeah, every time I empty the trash and see another 50GB gone, I won't say I'm not a little happy to slim down on my operational system kinda thing...

Keep the stuff you use, discard the rest. It shouldn't be complicated.

I can see that. I started on 4 so 4 is where I am. I have used 3 recently to convert some old kit files. No complaints. Tell me dispassionately what is bad about 4.

Could it open/play Kontakt libraries? Back in the early days Kontakt was an able to open Giga libraries..

I'm still awaiting for a sampler that replace Kontakt for orchestral samples

 

If Kontakt is not a near requirement for your projects, UVI Falcon is a good substitute on parts you would normally use Kontakt for. It needs less resources due to them using Flac compression for samples. It is a much smaller footprint than Kontakt.

You just have to delete kontakt, Or it will remain a crutch, if you can still open it.
