Newfangled saturate is a really great tool. I love the transient emphasis. I compared gold clip to my go to clippers, being Newfangled, Acustica Ash, TDR Limiter, and Kclip, and it lost to all four. It outperformed k clip in someways, but k clip still won because of tweakability / clipping modes etc. gold clip to me is just marketing, nothing special.

 

Vacuum tubes don't actively filter the audio by themselves. So part of the tube story is based on fiction. Tubes amplify the electrical signal, but they don't inherently filter out any specific frequencies or ranges.
The filtering is done by coupling transformers.
The causes are: core saturation, leakage inductance, and roll-off at both the high and low frequency ends.
Compression introduced by transformers also adds to amplitude nonlinearity within the given bandwidth.
Transformers also generate harmonics (primarily second and third order) of their own, due to the non-linear nature of magnetic materials.

apShaper lets you use a 0.4hz highpass which is the lowest I've seen. It's completely inaudible! DMG Limitless is also good at 1hz. Many DC filters are very destructive to the low-end. Even 5hz can noticeably alter the phase of subs. And no, a higher up highpass does NOT increase the "amount" of DC offset removal; literally any highpass at any order/frequency completely removes DC offset.
Also, apShaper is, imo, better than any other standard soft clipper because it uses a dedicated anti-aliasing filter which removes more aliasing without much extra load on the CPU. It's an objective, measurable, strings-free advantage it has over other soft clippers. Now, it probably won't beat another soft clipper at 32x oversampling but on my relatively decent CPU it causes a heavy impact when the oversampling is of good quality (yes oversampling can be at different qualities, the better the higher CPU)
It also is amazing just as a saturator. Being able to introduce individual orders of both odd & even harmonics is fantastic. Pre/Post filtering is great as well & it has modulation w/ dynamics. Imo it absolutely demolishes plugs like v-clip & standardclip as the raw flexibility apShaper provides is unmatched. This isn't even considering the price, which is very low + has consumer friendly DRM. An extra bonus

the yt video looks pretty straight forward for a clipper. I never really turn YT videos up loud enough to hear clipping, compression, or any more subtle effects. I'm going to check out the demo, but the problems I should be looking for are the fact it is iLok, uncracked, and it's absolutely ridiculous price? Or are there other problems resulting in 6 page discussion about a clipper plugin?

I used the demo on a few stems yesterday. Based on just using the demo, I would switch to it from Standard Clip as my primary clipper for stems, but I would not delete Standard Clip.

If money was no object, I would have already bought it. I even printed a few tracks with some very heavy cpu use plugins in front of it on that CS, and still not a single issue.

$250 for it is crazy, for me. But I doubt we will be seeing the usual PA-style 99.7 % Off sale anytime soon. They did a nice job on the plugin.
