Rewire is a fundamental and good technology if you want works in sync with many app itb, and not exist good technology as this.
Since Propellerheads\ReasonStudios has abandoned the adoption and development of Rewire, it's important start a discussion about alternatives comparison (Voicemeeter vs Asio link pro vs Jack4Win vs VAC vs SAR and vs many others). But these have latencies and other issues, i think not exist technology good as rewire.
But then why not try to petition for rewire technology to become open source?

 

Discontinue the Rewire protocol at the end of 2020.

ReWire is a proprietary protocol and is therefore not available in many open source programs. The protocol is made available free of charge, but this only applies to audio technology developers, and the ReWire source code may not be redistributed in the process.

Of course it is, this is the state of things. I am talking about a small (useless?) attempt to change this state of affairs (through a petition). Since it is a technology in the process of being abandoned, rather than letting it die before you even have a valid alternative, why not try to give new life to this protocol by projecting it in the world of open source?

Hello @adrian, I've already understood you and find it great that you address here times and you stand up for the preservation or open source. Unfortunately, I have no idea whether and how you can implement this, so I have written nothing. I suspect that has become very personnel-intensive and therefore too expensive for the manufacturer and that's why they discontinue it.

 

daft to get rid of it, don't know why they do these things sometimes. should be there if u wanna use it ,if not cool. btw does anyone know where the rewire api ,module whatever go in cubase 11 (mac for me)was looking for it cant find it

They managed to pack reason as a separate vsti and vst plugins for internal usage in a proper daw. It's much more usable imho. Afaik FL Studio did the same thing. For other "sync needs" there is "ableton link" which is supported by Reason Studios and others. Any reason for keeping rewire alive?

Others devs understood Props can't be trusted ... so they left ANYTHING related to Props devs.
As a former Reason power user, i totally remember when they said "no audio recording" and done Record as a separate app (and killed it to include it into Reason)
No VST, they done rack format.
And now they include VST ... lol

MIDI out ... and a lot more

Props can't be trusted, they are not stable. And other devs finally got this point.
As a side note, remember Rewire was ONLY CREATED for Rebirth integration into Reason ... you see what i mean ?

They do what they want ... and if you follow them you will hit the same wall.

 

I also think it was daft to get rid of it but making it open source or similar would not achieve anything because the nature of how it works requires each DAW manufacturer to go to the trouble of incorporating it into the latest version of their product. It's not something an enthusiastic team of open source devs could just bolt-on to an existing DAW without significant help from that DAW company. So, sad as it is, I think Rewire has had its day.

 

thanks for answer, but I'm on mac.reason i was asking cus i updated to cubase 12 and didn't realise they stopped it! was gutted .Still use it a lot.So was trying to figure out if there was a rewire api or plug that i could find in the cubase 11 version and maybe copy it to cubase 12 version or a folder see if it still worked.but not sure how or where it is in cubase 11 version. I remembered also that i had to do something to ableton live 11 to get it to see rewire but cant remember.

about 10 years ago XT Software house made a vst version of rewire (don't ask me what the hell it is), an uncracked demo has been released but maybe they are out of business, this vst rewire not more developed and old demo now is very very old.

 

The problem is to find a good alternative that allows different audio-midi apps to communicate, allowing free audio-midi flow while keeping them in sync. Rewire was an universal good solution. Link by Ableton is a solution for bpm sync but it does not allow the flow of audio-midi data from one application to another, (or i am wrong? I don't use Ableton ... at the moment).
I think that on Mac the problem is limited or non-existent because they have several solutions well integrated into the os (i don't knows Mac world), but on Windows only a few of these apps handle both audio and midi, many handle only one or the other. Many Windows midi routers needs installation of other tools (as bonjour) or are 32 bit (Midi Yoke), but is about audio stream and sync the problem. The different apps handle audio have various problems especially latency and crackles.
It would be interesting to be able to make a comparison between various app as VB-Audio solutions (VB Cables or different Voicemeeter versions), Asio Link Pro (this is already dead), Jack4Win (hard to set up), Synchronous Audio Router, VAC with Asio4All (because VAC alone not have Asio support), Dante software only solutions (Via and VSC), DDMF Virtual Audio Stream, and others ...

Actually, Rewire was created for Cubase VST 32 and Rebirth, long before Reason existed ;-)

 

when it would have been the most useful, was when we had computers that weren't fast enough to really make use of it. Say pre Cubase SX.
it was faster to bounce everything anyway.

 

Buy here EnergyXT ReWireVST is a VST2 so it would need to be put in a VST3 wrapper or use KV Element with the "EXT" to enable sync to host, then it needs to connect to a rewire slave.

ReWire VST is part of energyXT or was it seperate? How does it work to connect audio streams between two DAWs?

I second the idea for Propellerhead to open-source Rewire, like other "dead projects" it then has at least the chance to flourish once again (StarOffice, Netscape) instead of just being of practically no use to anyone anymore.

ReWire was so sick. I loved it. Now it's JACK or Ableton Link and loopmidi for me.
