I made this, with some help from friends, on another forum, but I figured Audiosex loves free instruments more than anyone, so see what you think. The somewhat flawed idea is to find all 128 midi GM soundbank sounds for free. In general I'm leaning toward Kontakt and trying to list only one or two of each instrument. So my slowly building, somewhat selfish list.

It's a nice project, but I believe if you stick at GM, you would probably want to use it in a GM environment. And then it's not enough to just have quality sounds. They also should fit well together and that's where the hard work begins.
Else you would end up with something like NI's Bandstand. It flopped for a reason.

This made me think, maybe we could have a consolidated thread for free (Kontakt) samples. I had a folder with freebies that weighted around 60GB before I deleted some. For smaller/simpler projects or demos or if you don't want to go around hunting huge libraries these do just fine on their own. Could also serve as a list of Kontakt freebies. It could also contain links to phloopy's posts so that everything also has its own separate thread (at least for new stuff or what gets posted) or other pre-made lists from elsewhere. Have a sticky or something. Hm...

I did a decent size list of SFZ/VST on KVR and such and a small list of Kontakt 5 and then Idfpower did a massive Kontakt list a little lower on the thread if that helps. Concated with the 'King of Free' Phloopy's great finds and the GM Soundbank list you would have a good starting point. Also there is a Vi Control topic with some more freebies.

Yeah, I've already gathered a few links of this kind. I'll slowly start sorting them out. As good as those are, they still require some digging and you'll probably find many duplicates etc. The ideal thing would be to have them all listed separately (even by library name, developer name, instrument type...). I'd also rather include Kontakt builds only. Soft synths are generally more organised. Kontakt libs are a bit all over the place. It feels extravagant but I know I'll probably love myself for doing it in the future. *yes*

I could start a basic thread and build on it. There could also be comments with missing stuff which could get deleted after adding them so it doesn't get too crowded.

Adding mirrors in case they "die" would also be cool.
