i use ableton as my daw, and of course it is NOT optimised to work with midi at all.
i mean making a track from scratch using only midi.

i've tried sekaiju and aria maestosa and it looks like aria maestosa is the easiest and most straightforward one. anvil studio seems like i'm back in 2002
do you know of any other?

FL Studio has a great piano roll.

I haven't used these but I'm somewhat familiar with their capabilities. To the best of my knowledge and experience, I can recommend Digital Performer. It is among best-in-class among the major DAWs when it comes to MIDI, that being its original intended feature set. I'm not sure it drastically beats out Cubase and Logic at this point, which also retain their original midi-only functions, but it is nonetheless very comprehensive. For example, you can compose solely using the Midi Event List if you want to.

You can disable the audio engine and put it in MIDI only mode. I started using it specifically because I was looking for a midi-focused sequencer. I've since moved on to Reaper which I found suites my needs just as well.

If you're on a Mac, Logic is your tool. On Windows those are Cubase or Cakewalk.

Notation isn't too common on other big ones I think.

 

From those screenshots he wants something closer to Rapid Composer, etc than a real DAW. If I didn't want Cubase or Logic, I would try Motu Digital Performer next. There is even PC version available to try before buy.

Cakewalk has sophisticated MIDI features. Unless some other DAWs like Cubase it also can open and save MIDI files directly. But if you're looking for MIDI only, the Onyx Arranger and maybe some other tools from NTONYX could be helpful: http://ntonyx.com/
