On Mac, there are color tags that you can add to any folder or file in the file browser aka Finder. It just shows a little dot next to the file name. Or do you mean automatically?

There is a little known utility called 'Bulk Rename Utility' It allows you to add/ remove or change to any file in a folder.
For example. you could go in to a given folder and add a '.' or any OTHER character at the beginning of the filename so that when you click OK, all those files will move to the top of the list. Or you could put a 'z' at the beginning then all those files would go to the bottom!

It's also free, and has never contained malware to my knowledge.

Add the 'Date accessed' column to Explorer and sort by that?
