yeah there was a dude ran a bbs I used, he hooked his internet connection to the bbs and you could port into the internet through his dial up bbs, i spent a lot of hours exploring that thing before finally getting my own internet service for the house. I think I had it before we got it at my place of employment.
The BBS scene was great for a long time...

yeah if you want to understand modern PA systems, you have to read Bear's search for the perfect sound system for the Dead, man he built some crazy ass systems, that the band was scared to play in front of because if they came loose they'd be crushed.

i don't know if you used to download mods, but I had an amiga so I used to get alot of mod files to play on it while I dabbled with 3d (slow as fuck) and 2d paint programs. it was pretty interesting you could get 3 or 4 minute or longer song files and they didn't take up much space. Still have to convert a few of those to audio files..

that and DEMO disks. this was hi res shizzle back in the day

Man, what wouldn't I give to witness one of the Wall of Sound Seastones...

For the uninitiated : Seastones was a modular synth performance that Ned Lagin did during setbreaks on Dead shows for a while. He was often joined by bassist Phil Lesh, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and guitarist Jerry Garcia. It was basically completely free improvisation with tons of Buchlas and Serges.

Also Phil's bass was wired in such a way that he could flip on a switch and send each string's sound to a different speaker array.

NoiseTracker on the Amiga got me into making music myself, so yeah... I still watch new Amiga (and other platforms) demos! It's absolutely insane what people can make the thing do these days.

Yep.. was running a local bbs, had a bud that worked at the telco. He hooked me up with a local university telnet connection and I was the only BBS in the area with usenet news and "actual network" access in the late 80's. Of course I was on fidoNET, RBBSnet and just about every other amateur telco BBS xxNET you could think of...IRC became "self-aware" in late '88 and EFNET was born late '89-'90 - EFNET was the "1337" among the "1337" when it came to warez. All this being made possible by USR HST 19200 phone modems... back then warez sites were setup on corporate and commercial ftp's and buried in deep directory structures until the admins finally figured out what was going on and locked down the ftp and deleted the warez directories. :) Many "groups" had spreaders, uploaders and crackers that hung on IRC warez chans and that was mainly how you got warez was either from IRC bots or warez ftp's - local BBS's played a role as well... And folks complain now about how quickly warez disappears - they have no idea. fun times...

Between 1999 and 2000 I worked for a DSL provider and would literally have Napster running from the time I clocked in. The network guys never said shit to me about ramping up bandwidth because I'm pretty sure they were doing it too. Eventually I moved on to Soulseek and rocked that for a hot minute. I remember buying a 40GB to just to store music thinking "I'll never fill this up" lol

there were so many reliable sites in the 90's like F.O.S.I. Appz, ShareReactor, and FTP sites that was a different era in time but fondly remembered by many of us who used V92 56k modems from a time before DSL.
