Yeah, that was a grammatically accurate sentence. Suck it up. Adverbs are cool. :bleh:

Aaaannnywaaays ... this guy seems to have brought up a good point re what might be wrong with how you 'go for that analogue sound' if you're thinking you'll add wonders to your mix with a multi-band saturator - even the best of them.

Watched this video yesterday and wondered what this forum's opinion on the matter is.

To me the solution is not using multiband saturators. They really only make a very subtle and already to me unnecessary fiddeling process even more time consuming.

    Clear effects are beautiful.

    AI summary:
    • Multiband saturators work differently than single band saturators. With single band saturators, harmonics are generated based on the fundamental frequency present.
    • With multiband saturators, the harmonics generated in one band do not carry over to other bands. Each band operates independently to generate harmonics.
    • This means the harmonics generated may not be "in key" or musically related to the song if the saturator picks up the wrong frequency range to generate harmonics from.
    • When setting the bands on a multiband saturator, you need to carefully choose the crossover point and ensure it is below an "in key" fundamental to generate good harmonics.
    • Complex mixes or mix buses are more prone to this issue as the saturator may pick up unrelated frequencies rather than ones from instruments.
    • An example given was saturating around 523Hz when the song is in D major, meaning out of key harmonics would be generated.
    • Resonances between notes are also problematic areas for the saturator to pick up.
    • Solutions proposed were carefully setting bands, and using EQ before and after to emphasize/de-emphasize certain frequencies for the saturator.

I've no clue why, but these utterly bullshit videos trigger me a lot.

'Saturators are generating harmonics from the fundamental frequency' ??? :suicide: :suicide: :suicide: How would they be doing it? By applying a LP filter which moves with the frequency according to the input??? My ass!!! This is beginner stuff! Generate two sine waves, with the second being the whole multiple of the first (doesn't matter if odd or even) and blend it in. No additional harmonics generated? Of course they are generated, what an idiot! Too dumb to make a simple test!

'The harmonics generated from one band do not affect what's generated in the next band'. Bummer. Of course not, moron, that's the whole purpose of an MB Saturator! :facepalm:Unbelievable.

Oh, and emphasizing a frequency that doesn't belong to the key generates harmonics which also don't belong to it? What a surprise!

And the solution, well, TBH, I stopped there because the solution is to ignore this bunch of bullshit.

Holy moly, this is the second utterly bullshit video by Sage Audio that I watched. Where's my YT channel blocker? Ah, found it.

Don't get me wrong guys, I'd never blame a beginner for not knowing this, but if you make a video (tutorial [cough]) you should've at least understood the basics.

How did you create this summary please? This would be excellent for pulling key points from long tutorials. I know you can copy and paste the transcript from youtube videos into chat gpt and get it to summarize that... is this what you did here?

I'm using Universal Summarizer by Kagi. Free, but requires an account. Also works on PDFs, websites etc. There are like a dozen other YouTube AI summarisers out there if you don't like this particular one.

3rd harmonics can sometimes be helpful, but fundamentally the use of digital saturation in mastering is a bad habit that creates digital artifacts.

This is another Sage Audio video that makes me go "hmmm....naw" about. Harmonics are not always wanted/added on the fundamentals, but the yummy stuff inbetween fundamentals. Just like parallel compression brings out the yummyness inbetween the hits on a drumkit.

I never liked multi band saturators. I even don't like single band saturators. Now I know at least why I disliked the multi band thingies.

I'd say what you apply in mastering should solely depend on the mix. If the mix allowes for a gentle saturation, why not?

Dude didn't know that multiband saturators process bands in parallel and expected it to be processed in series. Aight. Par for the course for Sage Audio.
