    Nice. I skipped Zen 4 because it looked like AM5 wasn't ready. I went for discounted AM4 stuff, a 5600x and a RTX 3050. Which is fine for my 1080p monitor/TVs. But 1080p displays are becoming less norm, and a 3050 just isn't going to cut it forever.

    Zen 5 looks promising though, especially interested in their mobile APU chips, since they may outperform the 5600x and RTX 3050 in a single chip while being quite affordable. If there's ever a Steam Deck 2 it might use that (primarily docked), and cost like $500-600 USD, which will be quite a good price for that performance. Also might consider a laptop with such a chip, if it outperforms my current machine and has decent thermals.

    An 8-Core Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 engineering sample has been spotted in the wild, maybe fake??? :)

    July 2024 release for Zen 5 desktop and laptop (Zen 5 + Zen 5 dense cores). +16% IPC.

    Desktop models at launch: 9600X (65w), 9700X (65w), 9900X (120w), 9950X (170w). Except for the 9950X, all models down 40-50w TDP compared to previous gen. No NPU.

    Mobile models at launch: AI-9 365, AI-9 370 HX. No direct previous gen equivalents. 370 HX: +35-40% iGPU performance compared to previous top model (so I guess that's about a Radeon 6500 in discrete GPU terms?). 5x uplift for NPU (10 -> 50 TOPs). 28w TDP.

    Official AMD slide:

    I think there's no Ghz improvement at least in high-end.
    It doesn't look is gonna be as amazing as rumors said... again.
    Only in power usage.

    What about 9950x3d ? Anything about power consumption ? Im one step of buying 7750x3d worried about Taiwan to wait more ( if war breaks then cpu prices will explode ) .

    I think it's more efficient, and they've doubled the instruction and data bandwidth. If they release at a similar price it will have been worth the wait.

    Are you using it for audio or gaming?

    I don't think they announced anything with regards to 3D cache models, so it's anyone's guess at this point. Non-3D MSRP is said to be the same as 7000 series. I wouldn't expect the 3D 7000s to drop nearly as much as regular 7000s in price.

    Looks like a great generation for performance/watt, and just about okay for raw performance uplift.

    Yeah, wait for Zen 6 which is rumoured to be 32-core. I can't wait as I don't have a desktop computer, and I need it for my increased Nebula usage. I think the 2x instruction and data pipeline improvement of the 9950X will increase performance more than a small GHz boost would, but we'll have to wait for some official benchmarks.

    It's no small feat, but the official AMD slide is there regarding performance.
    "up to" and no other details usually means the average performance raise would be a bit lower than that.

    There's the possibility the fastest 9950X (which doubles power usage I think) could still be much faster than previous flagship. Although the small letter "up to" still applies.

    Because this slide appears to be across all the models (geomean can go fuck itself, I'm sick of marketing though Intel is even worse)

    I think the 9950X will outperform the 7950X due to the latest data and instruction bandwidth improvements, and if it's a similar price I will be very happy since the 7950X already benchmarked really well for audio. Of course, if you have a previous gen CPU it's probably not worth upgrading, but that's been the case for every generation of CPU. Since I am currently without a desktop machine, any computer would be worth the 6-month wait if the performance is better.

    The 9900X is tempting due to the 120W TDP and a 9700X could be useful in a smaller setup (only 65W).
    • Ryzen 9 7950X (170W) -> Ryzen 9 9950X (170W) -> 16-core
    • Ryzen 9 7900X (170W) -> Ryzen 9 9900X (120W) -> 12-core
    • Ryzen 7 7700X (105W) -> Ryzen 7 9700X (65W) -> 8-core
    • Ryzen 5 7600X (105W) -> Ryzen 5 9600X (65W) -> 6-core
