Cubase & Mac Sonoma

Discussion in 'Software' started by Vincent Price, Feb 17, 2024.

  1. Hello,

I am thinking about putting Cubase back onto my Mac. When I last had Cubase I had the 2015 MacBook but now I have the M1 MacBook running Sonoma.

I am not sure whether Cubase 11 (Sister Site) would run on Sonoma, would Cubase 12? (I am superstitious about 13)

The only thing I am worried about with Cubase 12 is that I'd have to disable SIP. I have always had my reservations about this, which is why I haven't done it already.

Enlighten me, what is the worst that could happen...software damage....hardware damage?

I have a Time Machine backup on an external SSD

    Thanks

    Superstitious? Are you kidding?

Go for the last version mate.

Windows hasn't got SIP, so System Integrity Protection is another layer to not change some parts of the OS. So finally you are the owner of the system, so you choose. Hardward damage? I don't think so, software damage? could be, but if you need this program :dunno: make a secure copy with time machine and go ahead.

Why you don't try to install it, with SIP ON, and tell us what happens first?

Some people says if you codesign it (your own certificate with Xcode and codesign it with your certificate), then it works with sip on.

Yes,I know. it was my irony, saying SIP is a security element exclusive of macos.

All SIP really does, is prevent you from modifying or deleting protected system files. It's similar to if you were running Windows and did not have permissions to install drivers or modify /system32, temp types of folders.

It can protect you from spyware, and malware but mostly from slimey websites that try to forcefeed downloaded junk. adware, etc. Some of the FFS they use on sister site do that. Nitro-whatever.

You do not need to disable SIP completely in many cases, but I think with Cubase you might have to. I can look, but I am not running it.

But there are ways you can get lots of old things to work too, by replacing .dylib libstdc+++ etc files. So you can install Altiverb 7, old PA, McDSP, Izotope, etc. But not Soundtoys, Sonnox/Oxford, Lexicon, etc. sorts of 32 bit things. Only the older 64bit stuff will work., at least last time I checked. :)

free file servers, or free file storage. I think Mega, RapidGator are usually the best ones for not doing stuff like that. They slam the user with ads if not logged in or whatever, and an executable. It's way worse on Windows because if they can do a true force-feed like that old mime/mhtml ActiveX exploit it will execute the file as soon as it is downloaded. On Mac you just get stuck with some BS file downloading. I'm sure people do end up running them, or they wouldn't bother with it.

The PC platform (windows supports it) has hardware TPM which is as close to SIP as the PC side gets with regard to "security" gizmos. On the PC side TPM is mostly easily defeated. "Codesigning" is luckily a PITA that PC folks have been spared - praise the witches...

Are you talking a legit Cubase install or a k'd version?? I honestly can't remember if I have SIP on or off (I think my MOTU drivers might have made me at some point), but all it does is protect installations from going to certain spots, and certain types of files Apple really doesn't want you to install for whatever reason. With SIP off, YOU still have to do any damage yourself by installing something untrustworthy. It's just like virus protection. You actually don't need it, if you just be careful with your system.

For me (disclaimer, this is just MY experience), Cubase 13, and 12 before it, are running fine on Sonoma. Just got done exporting a mix and took a break to come here haha. But, mine are legit as well, so YMMV. To be honest, I've had more trouble with Halion and Groove Agent, and MediaBay then Cubase heh.

Just give official trial a go, you have 60 days to decide do you want to fuck with all of it or not.

Seriously. Disabling SIP is 2 reboots and a command or two in terminal. If you are going to install any of the openSSH/hook iLok bypass stuff you probably will do it anyway. If you are deciding on Logic or Cubase, SIP is really the least of your things to consider.

You do not need to disable SIP to install interface software. You need to catch it at the General tab of Security Preferences within 15 or 30 minutes of rebooting or the option to allow it will disappear until you reboot again or reinstall the software.

I like having a second separate DAW to mix in, and I like mixing in Cubase. But I do not need a duplicate set of all my plugins. Reaper also uses AU. Patchwork is an acceptable workaround for some stragglers, but not for an entire plugin format.
