    Hi all

Trying to get the core library running with the latest superior drummer version. Ive installed the core library "part 1" and the update from a site that seems to be pretty good at sharing this sort of thing

Basic Sound library 36 GIG (2017)
    Update 1.3: Team V.R | 02 November 2022 | 2.15 GB / 2.47 GB

    Core library aversion file
    1.3.0
    minreq S 3.1.0

    Superior Drummer 3 plug-in version 3.3.6 (build 35757) [64-bit Intel VST 2]
Standalone host version 3.3.6 (build 35757)
    SOUND LIBRARIES
    ....
    Superior Drummer 3 - Electronic version 1.0.0
    Superior Drummer 3 - Percussion version 1.3.0
    Superior Drummer 3 version 1.3.0

When i click on the Superior Drummer 3 library in SD, i get the error message "The sound library Superior Drummer 3 needs to be updated. Please use the Toontrack Product manager to update"

Im guessing im an update short somewhere. No amount of changing the aversion file seems to make a difference. All of the other libraries i have from the site work fine.

Am i missing something, or is it just a case of the version being way to old?

    Thanks

    Mark

You mention you installed "Part one" of the core library, but you need all of them installed. It's something like 250gb to install Superior Drummer. It's enormous.

Use the search function here, I have seen this error mentioned more than once before. I'm on Mac and can't really help you. Maybe someone will know this from seeing it before on Windows. I would look for SD3 search results and I would read the threads marked Solved first.

It is not a case of "too old" versions, it's an installation related error.

    Thanks @clone

Im on mac as well :)

The comments that were associated with the download said

"the sound library download is divided into 5 parts. The minimum install size is approximately 41 GB."

But then i just noticed that it also says

"Sound library downloads must be installed in order."

Thats what confused me as the first download is about 41 gig installed so i didn't realise i had to get all 5 parts and install it all.

Wonder how well this will work across a network as i dont currently have a big enough drive to plug into the macbook.

It might work, but it will suck. The best option for macbook is either an external SSD or USB-C drive. I use the Lacie Rugged USB-C 4TB drives, and they work great with all my samples on there, Falcon, Kontakt, etc. I leave the samples in a project on there without any problems, but after I stem/multitrack bounce the project I will move them onto my local SSD to start mixing.

The Lacie drives are a little more money than others, but I cannot say a single bad word about them. Maybe they are 20 or 30 dollars more than others of same capacity. Many people will by default recommend SSD for everything. Many of them do not understand the possible implications of TRIM with SSD.

being in the market for a second SSD, can you elaborate on TRIM??

It makes data recovery impossible, or very close to it. If you google string like Data Recovery, SSD, Trim, you will find links to many articles from drive manufacturers. It's not as "pie-in-the-sky" as many people think. I have seen multiple cases of people getting burned, losing lots of data on their ssd, just on this forum. To me, it is the only true downside to SSD. But when you are talking about potentially losing 4 terabytes of data, it's something to think about. They cost more, but you always pay more for better speeds; so I do not think price is a "con" about SSD. The supposedly finite number of times you can write to/over an SSD is just a fact of specifications to consider, so I don't really think of that in the "Con" column either. Most people do not realize TRIM can cause irrecoverable data loss if something goes wrong.

Google's explanation: It's not possible to recover deleted data from TRIM enabled SSDs. This is because when an SSD erases data with the TRIM feature enabled the data being deleted is immediately overwritten permanently. This makes it impossible to recover the data, as it no longer exists.

The core libraries are indeed large. They consist of ~5 portions with varying levels of mic bleed and stereo vs surround contents etc... You do NOT need all of them installed unless you want them all. In my particular case I never use the surround stuff (main surround contents and extra surround mic bleeds) and as such I only installed the bits with all the stereo content and all the stereo mic bleeds (Parts 1, 2, and 5) and had no issues at all. It sounds like in your case you have some library content that is legacy (vintage v1 or v2), or you were remiss on installing a key SD3 library update. Even with the various updates SD3 is kind of similar to spectrasonics in the fact that there are SD3 updates that update the library contents separate from updates that take care of the vst/aax plugins and standalone code. A lot of these will require a certain preceding version level before they will update, so it's best to just apply each update in version order up to v3.36 (latest).

here's the breakdown regarding the factory library contents -
    Factory library:
Part 1: “Basic Sound Library” (Basic library with all instruments, room OH Dyn and Amb Ribbon mics, and snare, kick and toms leaks)
Part 2: “Room Mics 1” (Additional room mics: OH Cond, Amb Near, Amb Mid)
    Part 3: “Room Mics 2 – Surround (5ch)” (Additional microphones for 5.0 surround sound: Front L / R, Center and Surround L / R)
Part 4: “Room Mics 3 – Height Surround (6ch) “ (Additional microphones for surround sound 11.0: Front Height, Rear Height and Rear Height Wide)
Part 5: ” Extra Bleed “ (Additional “leaks” into microphones)

You can have a single part or all parts installed and it should only affect how how deep the sampling goes for stereo or surround, nothing else. For the factory library(s) to work correctly, you must install the update:
Toontrack – Superior Drummer 3 Library Update v1.2.0

    additionally;
Superior drummer is pretty restrictive when it comes to routing and paths. You have to place all of your .obw files in the same folder, and it has to be named exactly like this -
    SL-SuperiorDrummer3\Sounds

Looks like it could be the fact that i havent done the 1.2 library update and went to the 1.3 update directly. Will try that today and hopefully will get me up and running. Thanks!!

    Got it working!!

    • Installed core library Part 1: “Basic Sound Library”
    • Copied contents of 1.2 update over the top of install
    • Copied contents of 1.3 update over the top of install
    • (this was the step i missed before) - you need to add a seperate library path for the core library in the Manage Library settings dialog - the core library didn't show up by default as i guess its not an "additional library"
