    In my experience with *NIX systems (excluding macOS) used for much else other than internet surfing;
    1.) there's a lack of usable apps for serious media production.
    2.) the systems are obtuse for routine management and software installations - constant need for additional package installs just to get one app running == ridiculous.
    3.) I found x-windows to be, at best, unstable - I need a stable windowed GUI as I do not wish to spend time screwing with the OS when trying to create. A command line based system is obtuse for use as a media production platform.
    4.) trouble shooting software installations are a horrendous PITA and you WILL have to trouble shoot software installs and there are very rarely ever times where package installers don't run amok.
    5.) inconsistencies from day to day upon boot up and running apps that were working the day before and then a day later crashing... :deep_facepalm:

    Windows with all its flaws is IMO a better platform (for me at least) at this point in time. There may be a point in the future when *NIX will stabilize into a usable platform but IMO that time is not yet upon us...

    Why do you recommand external drive for tight budget? Do you mean, you perceive them to be cheaper (per each TB's?).

    neither of those claims are exactly true,

    SSD drives do suffer from speed drops when writing lots of data at once, and also when drive gets full, particularly QLC (quad layer cell) drives and drives without DRAM cache will have more noticeable write speed drops,
    HDD drives do suffer from speed drops when writing or reading data, depending on platter segment data is stored in, and how fragmented or full capacity it is,

    on top of that, read/write speed depends on actual file sizes, sample libraries which have tiny files, won't reach advertised read/write speeds of neither SSD nor HDD, it's a marketing gimmick to list only spec of sequential read/write of huge file onto empty non-system drive

    Overall, I would agree with you with my marginal knowledge of iX OS.
    In their current form, they are unsuitable for users who want or need everything to work out of the box (typical Windows user and even more typical Apple users). In addition, there is far too little on offer in the area of user-friendly A/V production. As you said.
    In detail:
    1. yepp, 2. Package installation should be on the software vendors side! I've done it , it IS possible 3.IDK, I'm fine with shell commands, but I understand, it's a matter of taste and where you come from 4. IMHO again it's the vendor of software's obligation to produce perfectly working software installations 5. I never observed this behaviour. Is it possibly - again - a software problem?

    All in all I think it's the software/hardware industry which treats iX badly .
